Job 22

Eliphaz Accuses and Exhorts Job

1Then Eliphaz the Temanite 1responded,2“Can a vigorous 2man be of use to God, Or a wise man be useful to himself?3Is there any pleasure to 3the Almighty if you are righteous, Or profit if you make your ways perfect?4Is it because of your 4reverence that He reproves you, That He 5enters into judgment against you?5Is not 6your wickedness great, And your iniquities without end?6For you have 7taken pledges of your brothers without cause, And 8stripped 9men naked.7To the weary you have 10given no water to drink, And from the hungry you have 11withheld bread.8But the earth 12belongs to the 13mighty man, And 14the honorable man dwells in it.9You have sent 15widows away empty, And the 16strength of the 17orphans has been crushed.10Therefore 18snares surround you, And sudden 19dread terrifies you,11Or 20darkness, so that you cannot see, And an 21abundance of water covers you.

12“Is not God 22in the height of heaven? Look also at the 23distant stars, how high they are!13You say, ‘24What does God know? Can He judge through the thick darkness?1425Clouds are a hiding place for Him, so that He cannot see; And He walks on the 26vault of heaven.’15Will you keep to the ancient path Which 27wicked men have trod,16Who were snatched away 28before their time, Whose 29foundations were 30washed away by a river?17They 31said to God, ‘Depart from us!’ And ‘What can 32the Almighty do to them?’18Yet He 33filled their houses with good things; But 34the counsel of the wicked is far from me.19The 35righteous see and are glad, And the innocent mock them,20Saying, ‘Truly our adversaries are cut off, And their 36abundance 37the fire has consumed.’

21“3839Yield now and be at peace with Him; Thereby good will come to you.22Please receive 4041instruction from His mouth And establish His words in your heart.23If you 42return to 43the Almighty, you will be 44restored; If you 45remove unrighteousness far from your tent,24And 46place your 47gold in the dust, And the gold of Ophir among the stones of the brooks,25Then 48the Almighty will be your 49gold And choice silver to you.26For then you will 50delight in 51the Almighty And lift up your face to God.27You will 52pray to Him, and 53He will hear you; And you will pay your vows.28You will also decree a thing, and it will be established for you; And 54light will shine on your ways.29When 55you are cast down, you will speak with 56confidence, And the 5758humble person He will save.30He will deliver one who is not innocent, And he will be 59delivered through the cleanness of your hands.”
