Israel Rebuked at Bochim
1Now the angelH43971 of the LORDH3068 went upH5927 fromH4480 GilgalH1537 toH413 BochimH1066 and saidH559, “I brought you upH5927 out of EgyptH4714 and ledH935 you intoH413 the landH776 thatH834 I had promisedH7650 to your fathersH1, and I saidH559, ‘I will neverH3808H5769 breakH6565 My covenantH1285 with youH854, 2and youH859 are notH3808 to makeH3772 a covenantH1285 with the peopleH3427 of thisH2063 landH776, but you shall tear downH5422 their altarsH4196.’
Yet you have notH3808 obeyedH8085 My voiceH6963. WhatH4100 is thisH2063 you have doneH6213? 3So nowH1571 I tell youH559 that I will notH3808 drive outH1644 these people before youH6440; they will beH1961 thorns in your sidesH6654, and their godsH430 will beH1961 a snareH4170 to you.”
When the angelH4397 of the LORDH3068 had spokenH1696 theseH428 wordsH1697 toH413 allH3605 the IsraelitesH1121H3478, the peopleH5971 lifted upH5375 their voicesH6963 and weptH1058. 5So they calledH7121H8034 thatH1931 placeH4725 BochimH10662 and offered sacrificesH2076 thereH8033 to the LORDH3068.
Joshua’s Death and Burial
(Joshua 24:29–33)
6After JoshuaH3091 had dismissedH7971 the peopleH5971, the IsraelitesH1121H3478 went outH1980 to take possession ofH3423 the landH776, eachH376 to his own inheritanceH5159. 7And the peopleH5971 servedH5647 the LORDH3068 throughoutH3605 the daysH3117 of JoshuaH3091 and of the eldersH2205 whoH834 outlivedH748H3117H310 him, whoH834 had seenH7200 allH3605 the greatH1419 worksH4639 thatH834 the LORDH3068 had doneH6213 for IsraelH3478.
8And JoshuaH3091 sonH1121 of NunH5126, the servantH5650 of the LORDH3068, diedH4191 at the ageH1121H8141 of 110H3967H6235. 9They buriedH6912 himH853 in the landH1366 of his inheritanceH5159, at Timnath-heresH85563 in the hill countryH2022 of EphraimH669, northH6828 of MountH2022 GaashH1608.
Israel’s Unfaithfulness
(Isaiah 43:22–28; Jeremiah 2:23–37)
10After thatH310 wholeH3605 generationH1755 had alsoH1571 been gatheredH622 toH413 their fathersH1, anotherH312 generationH1755 rose upH6965 whoH834 did notH3808 knowH3045 the LORDH3068 orH1571 the worksH4639 thatH834 He had doneH6213 for IsraelH3478. 11And the IsraelitesH1121H3478 didH6213 evilH7451 in the sightH5869 of the LORDH3068 and servedH5647 the BaalsH1168.
12Thus they forsookH5800 the LORDH3068, the GodH430 of their fathersH1, who had brought themH3318 out of the landH776 of EgyptH4714, and they followedH1980 afterH310 variousH312H430 godsH430 of the peoplesH5971 around themH5439. They bowed downH7812 to them and provokedH3707 the LORD to angerH3068, 13for they forsookH5800 HimH3068 and servedH5647 BaalH1168 and the AshtorethsH6252.
14Then the angerH639 of the LORDH3068 burnedH2734 against IsraelH3478, and He delivered themH5414 into the handsH3027 of those who plunderedH8154H8155 themH853.4 He sold themH4376 into the handsH3027 of their enemiesH341 all aroundH5439, whom they wereH3201 noH3808 longerH5750 able to resistH5975H6440. 15WhereverH3605 Israel marched outH3318, the handH3027 of the LORDH3068 wasH1961 against them to bring calamityH7451, just asH834 HeH3068 had swornH1696H7650H3068 to them. So they were greatly distressedH3334H3966.
Judges Raised Up
16Then the LORDH3068 raised upH6965 judgesH8199,5 who saved themH3467 from the handsH3027 of those who plundered themH8154.
17Israel, howeverH1571, did notH3808 listenH8085 toH413 their judgesH8199. InsteadH3588, they prostitutedH2181 themselves withH310 otherH312 godsH430 and bowed downH7812 to them. They quicklyH4118 turnedH5493 fromH4480 the wayH1870 of their fathersH1, who had walkedH1980 in obedienceH8085 to the LORD’sH3068 commandmentsH4687; they did notH3808 do as their fathersH6213H3651 had done.
18WheneverH3588 the LORDH3068 raised upH6965 a judgeH8199 for the Israelites, He wasH1961 withH5973 that judgeH8199 and saved themH3467 from the handsH3027 of their enemiesH341 while the judgeH8199H3588 was still aliveH3605H3117; for the LORDH3068 was moved to pityH5162 by their groaningH5009 under thoseH6440 who oppressed themH3905 and afflicted themH1766. 19But whenH1961 the judgeH8199H7725 diedH4191, the Israelites became even more corruptH7843 than their fathersH1, goingH1980 afterH310 otherH312 godsH430 to serve themH5647 and bow downH7812 to them. They would notH3808 give upH5307 their evil practicesH4611 and stubbornH7186 waysH1870.
20So the angerH639 of the LORDH3068 burnedH2734 against IsraelH3478, and He saidH559, “BecauseH3282 thisH2088 nationH1471 has transgressedH5674 the covenantH1285 I laid downH6680 for their fathersH1 and has notH3808 heededH8085 My voiceH6963, 21IH589 will noH3808 longerH3254 drive outH3423 before themH4480H6440 anyH376 of the nationsH1471 JoshuaH3091 leftH5800 when he diedH4191. 22In this wayH4616 I will testH5254 whetherH518H3808 IsraelH3478 will keepH8104 the wayH1870 of the LORDH3068 by walkingH1980 in it asH834H8104 their fathers didH1.”
23That is why the LORDH3068 had left thoseH428 nationsH1471 in placeH5117 and had notH1115 driven them outH3423 immediatelyH4118 by delivering themH5414 into the handH3027 of JoshuaH3091.
