Berean Standard Bible
Tola
1After the timeH310 of AbimelechH40, a manH376 of IssacharH3485, TolaH8439 sonH1121 of PuahH6312, the sonH1121 of DodoH1734, rose upH6965 to saveH3467 IsraelH3478. He livedH3427 in ShamirH8069, in the hill countryH2022 of EphraimH669.
2Tola judgedH81991 IsraelH3478 twenty-threeH6242H7969 yearsH8141, and when he diedH4191, he was buriedH6912 in ShamirH8069.
Jair
3Tola was followed byH6965 JairH2971 the GileaditeH1569, who judgedH8199 IsraelH3478 twenty-twoH6242H8147 yearsH8141. 4He hadH1961 thirtyH7970 sonsH1121 who rodeH7392 onH5921 thirtyH7970 donkeysH5895. And they had thirtyH7970 townsH5892 in the landH776 of GileadH1568, which toH5704 thisH2088 dayH3117 are calledH7121 Havvoth-jairH2334.2
5When JairH2971 diedH4191, he was buriedH6912 in KamonH7056.
Oppression by the Philistines and Ammonites
6And againH3254 the IsraelitesH1121H3478 didH6213 evilH7451 in the sightH5869 of the LORDH3068. They servedH5647 the BaalsH1168, the AshtorethsH6252, the godsH430 of AramH758, SidonH6721, andH853H430 MoabH4124, andH853 the godsH430 of the AmmonitesH1121H5983 and PhilistinesH6430. Thus they forsookH5800 the LORDH3068 and did notH3808 serve HimH5647.
7So the angerH639 of the LORDH3068 burnedH2734 against IsraelH3478, and He sold themH4376 into the handsH3027 of the PhilistinesH6430H3027 and AmmonitesH1121H5983, 8who that veryH1931 yearH8141 harassedH7492 and oppressedH7533 the IsraelitesH1121H3478, and they did so for eighteenH8083H6240 yearsH8141 to allH3605 the IsraelitesH1121H3478 on the other sideH5676 of the JordanH3383 in GileadH1568, the landH776 of the AmoritesH567.
9The AmmonitesH1121H5983 alsoH1571 crossedH5674 the JordanH3383 to fightH3898 against JudahH3063, BenjaminH1144, and the houseH1004 of EphraimH669, and IsraelH3478 was in deepH3966 distressH3334.
10Then the IsraelitesH1121H3478 cried outH2199 toH413 the LORDH3068, sayingH559, “We have sinnedH2398 against You, for we have indeedH3588 forsakenH5800 our GodH430 and servedH5647 the BaalsH1168.”
11The LORDH3068 repliedH559, “When the EgyptiansH4714H4480, AmoritesH567H4480, AmmonitesH1121H5983H4480, PhilistinesH6430, 12SidoniansH6722, AmalekitesH6002, and MaonitesH45843 oppressed youH3905 and you cried outH6817 to MeH413, did I not saveH3467 youH853 from their handsH3027? 13But youH859 have forsakenH5800 MeH853 and servedH5647 otherH312 godsH430, soH3651 I will noH3808 longerH3254 saveH3467 youH853. 14GoH1980 and cry outH2199 toH413 the godsH430 you have chosenH977. Let themH1992 saveH3467 you in your timeH6256 of troubleH6869.”
15“We have sinnedH2398,” the IsraelitesH1121H3478 saidH559 toH413 the LORDH3068. “DealH6213H859 with usH3605 as You seeH5869 fitH2896; butH389 pleaseH4994 deliver us todayH5337H3117H2088!” 16So they put awayH5493 the foreignH5236 godsH430 from among themH7130 and servedH5647 the LORDH3068, and HeH5315 could no longer bearH7114 the miseryH5999 of IsraelH3478.
17Then the AmmonitesH1121H5983 were called to armsH6817 and campedH2583 in GileadH1568, and the IsraelitesH1121H3478 assembledH622 and campedH2583 at MizpahH4709. 18And the rulersH8269 of GileadH1568 saidH559H5971 toH413 oneH376 anotherH7453, “WhoeverH4310H376 will launchH2490 the attackH3898 against the AmmonitesH1121H5983 will beH1961 the headH7218 of allH3605 who liveH3427 in GileadH1568.”
