Nehemiah 6

American Standard Version

1Now it came to pass, when it wasH1961 reported to SanballatH5571 and TobiahH2900, and to GeshemH1654 the Arabian, and unto the rest of our enemiesH341, that I had builded the wallH2346, and that there wasH1961 no breachH6556 leftH3498 therein (though even unto that timeH6256 I had not setH5975 up the doorsH1817 in the gatesH8179), 2that SanballatH5571 and GeshemH1654 sentH7971 unto me, sayingH559, Come, let us meetH3259 togetherH3162 in one of the villages in the plainH1237 of OnoH207. But they thought to do me mischief. 3And I sentH7971 messengersH4397 unto them, sayingH559, I am doing a greatH1419 workH4399, so that I cannot comeH3381 down: whyH4100 should the workH4399 cease, whilst I leave it, and comeH3381 down to you? 4And they sentH7971 unto me fourH702 timesH6471 after this sort; and I answered them after the same mannerH1697. 5Then sentH7971 SanballatH5571 his servantH5288 unto me in like mannerH1697 the fifthH2549 timeH6471 with an openH6605 letterH107 in his handH3027, 6wherein was writtenH3789, It is reported among the nationsH1471, and Gashmu saith it, that thou and the JewsH3064 think to rebelH4775; for which cause thou art buildingH1129 the wallH2346: and thou wouldest be their kingH4428, according to these wordsH1697. 7And thou hast alsoH1571 appointedH5975 prophetsH5030 to preach of thee at JerusalemH3389, sayingH559, There is a kingH4428 in JudahH3063: and nowH6258 shall it be reported to the kingH4428 according to these wordsH1697. Come nowH6258 thereforeH6258, and let us take counselH3289 togetherH3162. 8Then I sentH7971 unto him, sayingH559, There are no such thingsH1697 done as thou sayest, but thou feignest them out of thine own heartH3820. 9For they all would have madeH6213 us afraidH3372, sayingH559, Their handsH3027 shall be weakened from the workH4399, that it be not done. But nowH6258, O God, strengthenH2388 thou my handsH3027.

10And I wentH935 unto the houseH1004 of ShemaiahH8098 the sonH1121 of DelaiahH1806 the sonH1121 of MehetabelH4105, who was shutH5462 up; and he saidH559, Let us meetH3259 togetherH3259 in the houseH1004 of GodH430, within the temple, and let us shutH5462 the doorsH1817 of the temple: for they will comeH935 to slayH2026 thee; yea, in the nightH3915 will they comeH935 to slayH2026 thee. 11And I saidH559, Should such a manH376 as I fleeH1272? and who is there, that, being such as I, would goH935 into the templeH1964 to save his life? I will not goH935 in. 12And I discerned, and, lo, GodH430 had not sentH7971 him; but he pronounced this prophecyH5016 against me: and TobiahH2900 and SanballatH5571 had hiredH7936 him. 13For this cause was he hiredH7936, that I should beH1961 afraidH3372, and do soH3651, and sinH2398, and that they might have matter for an evilH7451 report, that they might reproachH2778 me. 14RememberH2142, O my GodH430, TobiahH2900 and SanballatH5571 according to these their worksH4639, and alsoH1571 the prophetessH5031 NoadiahH5129, and the restH3499 of the prophetsH5030, that would have put me in fearH3372.

15So the wallH2346 was finished in the twentyH6242 and fifthdayH3117ofthe monthElul, in fiftyH2572 and twoH8147 daysH3117. 16And it came to pass, when all our enemiesH341 heardH8085thereof, that all the nationsH1471 that were about us feared, and were much castH5307 downH5307 in their own eyesH5869; for they perceived that this workH4399 wasH1961 wrought of our GodH430. 17Moreover in those daysH3117 the nobles of JudahH3063 sent manyH7235 lettersH107 unto TobiahH2900, and the lettersH107 of TobiahH2900 cameH935 unto them. 18For there were manyH7227 in JudahH3063 sworn unto him, because he was the son-in-law of ShecaniahH7935 the sonH1121 of ArahH733; and his sonH1121 JehohananH3076 had takenH3947 the daughterH1323 of MeshullamH4918 the sonH1121 of Berechiah to wife. 19AlsoH1571 they spake of his goodH2896 deeds before me, and reported my wordsH1697 to him. And TobiahH2900 sentH7971 lettersH107 to put me in fearH3372.
