Isaiah 9

Revised Version 1895

1But there shall be no gloomH6757 to herH5921 that was in anguish. In the former time he broughtH1980 intoH1980 contempt the landH776 of Zebulun and the landH776 of Naphtali, but in the latter time hath he madeH1980 it glorious, by the wayH1980 of the sea, beyondH5921 Jordan, Galilee of the nationsH5971. 2The peopleH1471 that walked in darkness have seen a greatH1431 light: they that dwelt in the landH6440 of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined. 3Thou hast multiplied the nation, thou hast increased their joy: they joy beforeH3117 thee according to the joy in harvest, as men rejoice when they divide the spoil. 4For the yoke of his burden, and the staff of his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor, thou hast broken as in the day of Midian. 5For all the armour of the armed manH1368 in the tumult, and the garments rolled in blood, shall evenH3588 be for burning, for fuel of fire. 6For unto usH5921 a child is born, unto usH5921 a son is given; and the governmentH4951 shall be uponH5921 his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, Mighty GodH3068, EverlastingH5769 Father, Prince of PeaceH7965. 7Of the increase of his government and of peace there shall be no end, uponH5307 the throne of DavidH7971, and uponH5307 his kingdom, to establish it, and to uphold it with judgmentH1697 and with righteousness from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORDH136 of hosts shall perform this. 8The Lord sentH559 a wordH559 into JacobH559, and it hath lighted uponH3427 IsraelH5971. 9And all the people shall know, even Ephraim and the inhabitant of Samaria, that say in pride and in stoutness of heart, 10The bricks are fallen, but we will build with hewn stone: the sycomores are cut downH5921, but we will change them intoH5921 cedars. 11Therefore the LORD shall setH7725 upH853 on highH5186 againstH3027 him the adversaries of Rezin, and shall stir upH853 his enemies; 12the Syrians beforeH5704, and the Philistines behind, and they shall devour IsraelH5971 with open mouth. For allH5704 this his anger is notH3808 turnedH7725 awayH7725, but his hand is stretched outH853 stillH7725. 13Yet the people hath not turned unto him that smote them, neither have they sought the LORDH3068 of hosts. 14Therefore the LORD will cut offH5375 from Israel headH7218 and tailH2180, palm-branch and rush, in one day. 15The ancient and the honourable man, he is the head; and the prophet that teacheth liesH1961, he is the tail. 16For they that lead this peopleH3808 causeH7725 them to err; and they that are led of them are destroyed. 17Therefore the Lord shall notH3588 rejoice over their young men, neither shall he have compassion on their fatherless and widows: for every one is profane and an evil-doer, and every mouth speaketh folly. For allH398 this his anger is notH3588 turned awayH398, but his hand is stretched outH784 still. 18For wickedness burneth as the fireH784; it devoureth the briers and thorns: yea, it kindleth in the thickets of the forest, and they roll upward in thick clouds of smoke. 19ThroughH5921 the wrath of the LORDH3225 of hosts is the land burnt upH5921: the peopleH376 also are as the fuel of fireH398; noH3808 manH376 spareth his brother. 20And one shall snatch on the right handH3027, and be hungry; and he shall eat on the leftH7725 handH3027, and they shall notH3808 be satisfied: they shall eat everyH3605 manH3605 the flesh of his own armH3027: 21Manasseh, Ephraim; and Ephraim, Manasseh: and they together shall be against Judah. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.
