Deuteronomy 4
Revised Version 1895
1And nowH6258, O IsraelH3478, hearken unto the statutesH2706 and unto the judgmentsH4941, whichH834 I teachH3925 youH834, for to doH6213 them; that ye may liveH2421, and goH935 in and possessH3423 the landH776 whichH834 the LORDH3068, the GodH430 of your fathersH1, giveth youH834. 2Ye shall notH3808 addH3254 unto the wordH1697 whichH834 I commandH6680 youH834, neitherH3808 shall ye diminish from it, that ye may keepH8104 the commandmentsH4687 of the LORDH3068 your GodH430 whichH834 I commandH6680 youH834. 3Your eyesH5869 have seenH7200 whatH834 the LORDH3068 didH6213 becauseH3588 of Baal-peorH1187: for allH3605 the menH376 that followedH310 Baal-peorH1187, the LORDH3068 thy GodH430 hath destroyedH8045 them from the midstH7130 of thee. 4But ye that didH3117 cleave unto the LORDH3068 your GodH430 are aliveH2416 everyH3605 one of youH859 this dayH3117. 5BeholdH7200, I have taughtH3925 youH859 statutesH2706 and judgmentsH4941, evenH3651 as the LORDH3068 my GodH430 commandedH6680 meH935, that ye should doH6213 soH3651 in the midstH7130 of the landH776 whither ye goH935 in to possessH3423 it. 6KeepH8104 therefore and doH6213 them; for this is your wisdomH2451 and your understandingH995 in the sightH5869 of the peoplesH5971, whichH834 shall hearH8085 allH3605 theseH428 statutesH2706, and sayH559, SurelyH3588 this greatH1419 nationH1471 is a wiseH2450 and understandingH995 peopleH5971. 7For whatH834 greatH1419 nationH1471 is there, that hath a godH430 soH7121 nigh unto them, as the LORDH3068 our GodH430 is whensoever weH3588 callH7121 uponH7121 him? 8And whatH834 greatH1419 nationH1471 is there, that hath statutesH2706 and judgmentsH4941 soH5414 righteousH6662 as allH3605 this lawH8451, whichH834 I setH5414 beforeH6440 youH834 this dayH3117? 9OnlyH7535 takeH5493 heedH8104 to thyself, and keepH8104 thy soulH5315 diligentlyH3966, lestH6435 thou forgetH7911 the things whichH834 thine eyesH5869 sawH7200, and lestH6435 they departH5493 from thy heartH3824 allH3605 the daysH3117 of thy lifeH5315; but makeH3045 them knownH3045 unto thy childrenH1121 and thy children’sH1121 childrenH1121; 10the dayH3117 that thou stoodest beforeH6440 the LORDH3068 thy GodH430 in HorebH2722, when the LORDH3068 saidH559 unto meH413, AssembleH6950 meH413 the peopleH5971, and I will makeH8085 them hearH8085 my wordsH1697, that they may learnH3925 to fearH3372 meH413 allH3605 the daysH3117 that they liveH2416 uponH5921 the earthH127, and that they may teachH3925 their childrenH1121. 11And ye cameH7126 nearH7126 and stoodH5975 underH8478 the mountainH2022; and the mountainH2022 burnedH1197 with fireH784 unto the heartH3820 of heavenH8064, with darknessH2822, cloudH6051, and thickH6205 darknessH2822. 12And the LORDH3068 spake unto youH859 outH413 of the midstH8432 of the fireH784: ye heardH8085 the voiceH6963 of wordsH1697, but ye sawH7200 noH369 formH8544; onlyH2108 ye heardH8085 a voiceH6963. 13And he declaredH5046 unto youH834 his covenantH1285, whichH834 he commandedH6680 youH834 to performH6213, evenH853 the tenH6235 commandmentsH1697; and he wroteH3789 them uponH5921 twoH8147 tables of stoneH68. 14And the LORDH3068 commandedH6680 meH3925 at that time to teachH3925 youH859 statutesH2706 and judgmentsH4941, that ye might doH6213 them in the landH776 whither ye goH5674 over to possessH3423 it. 15TakeH8104 ye therefore good heedH8104 unto yourselves; for ye sawH7200 noH3808 manner of formH8544 on the dayH3117 that the LORDH3068 spake unto youH3588 in HorebH2722 outH413 of the midstH8432 of the fireH784: 16lestH6435 ye corruptH7843 yourselves, and makeH6213 youH3605 a gravenH6459 imageH6459 in the formH8544 of anyH3605 figureH5566, the likenessH8403 of maleH2145 or femaleH5347, 17the likenessH8403 of anyH3605 beastH929 that is on the earthH776, the likenessH8403 of anyH3605 wingedH3671 fowlH6833 that flieth in the heavenH8064, 18the likenessH8403 of anyH3605 thingH3605 that creepeth on the groundH776, the likenessH8403 of anyH3605 fishH1710 that is in the waterH4325 underH8478 the earthH776: 19and lestH6435 thou liftH5375 upH5375 thine eyesH5869 unto heavenH8064, and when thou seest the sunH8121 and the moonH3394 and the starsH3556, evenH853 allH3605 the hostH6635 of heavenH8064, thou be drawnH5080 awayH5375 and worshipH7812 them, and serveH5647 them, whichH834 the LORDH3068 thy GodH430 hath dividedH2505 unto allH3605 the peoplesH5971 underH8478 the wholeH3605 heavenH8064. 20But the LORDH3068 hath takenH3947 youH3117, and broughtH3318 youH3117 forthH3318 outH3318 of the ironH1270 furnaceH3564, outH3318 of EgyptH4714, to be unto him a peopleH5971 of inheritanceH5159, as at this dayH3117. 21Furthermore the LORDH3068 was angryH599 with meH413 for your sakesH5921, and sware that I should notH1115 goH935 over JordanH3383, and that I should notH1115 goH935 in unto that goodH2896 landH776, whichH834 the LORDH3068 thy GodH430 giveth thee for an inheritanceH5159: 22but I mustH4191 dieH4191 in this landH776, I mustH4191 notH369 goH5674 over JordanH3383: but ye shall goH5674 over, and possessH3423 that goodH2896 landH776. 23TakeH8104 heedH8104 unto yourselves, lestH6435 ye forgetH7911 the covenantH1285 of the LORDH3068 your GodH430, whichH834 he madeH6213 with youH834, and makeH6213 youH834 a gravenH6459 imageH6459 in the formH8544 of anyH3605 thingH3605 whichH834 the LORDH3068 thy GodH430 hath forbidden thee. 24For the LORDH3068 thy GodH430 is a devouringH398 fireH784, a jealousH7067 GodH430. 25When thou shalt begetH3205 childrenH1121, and children’sH1121 childrenH1121, and ye shall have been longH3462 in the landH776, and shall corruptH7843 yourselves, and makeH6213 a gravenH6459 imageH6459 in the formH8544 of anyH3605 thingH3588, and shall doH6213 that whichH5869 is evilH7451 in the sightH5869 of the LORDH3068 thy GodH430, to provokeH3707 him to angerH3707: 26I call heavenH8064 and earthH776 to witness againstH5921 youH859 this dayH3117, that ye shall soonH3588 utterlyH6 perishH6 from offH5921 the landH776 whereunto ye goH5674 over JordanH3383 to possessH3423 it; ye shall notH3808 prolongH748 your daysH3117 uponH5921 it, but shall utterlyH6 be destroyedH8045. 27And the LORDH3068 shall scatterH6327 youH834 among the peoplesH5971, and ye shall be leftH7604 fewH4557 in numberH4557 among the nationsH1471, whither the LORDH3068 shall lead youH834 awayH5090. 28And there ye shall serveH5647 godsH430, the workH4639 of men’sH120 handsH3027, woodH6086 and stoneH68, whichH834 neitherH3808 seeH7200, norH3808 hearH8085, norH3808 eatH398, norH3808 smellH7306. 29But ifH3588 from thence ye shall seekH1245 the LORDH3068 thy GodH430, thou shalt findH4672 him, ifH3588 thou searchH1245 afterH3588 him with allH3605 thy heartH3824 and with allH3605 thy soulH5315. 30When thou art in tribulation, and allH3605 theseH428 things are comeH7725 upon thee, in the latterH319 daysH3117 thou shalt returnH7725 to the LORDH3068 thy GodH430, and hearken unto his voiceH6963: 31for the LORDH3068 thy GodH430 is a mercifulH7349 GodH430; he will notH3808 failH7503 thee, neitherH3808 destroyH7843 thee, norH3808 forgetH7911 the covenantH1285 of thy fathersH1 whichH834 he sware unto them. 32For askH7592 nowH4994 of the daysH3117 that are pastH7223, whichH834 were beforeH6440 thee, sinceH3588 the dayH3117 that GodH430 createdH1254 manH120 uponH5921 the earthH776, and from the one endH7097 of heavenH8064 unto the otherH2088, whetherH176 there hath been anyH4480 suchH2088 thingH1697 as this greatH1419 thingH1697 is, or hath been heardH8085 like it? 33DidH834 ever peopleH5971 hearH8085 the voiceH6963 of GodH430 speakingH1696 outH784 of the midstH8432 of the fireH784, as thou hast heardH8085, and liveH2421? 34Or hath GodH430 assayed to goH935 and takeH3947 him a nationH1471 from the midstH7130 of another nationH1471, by temptations, by signsH226, and by wondersH4159, and by warH4421, and by a mightyH2389 handH3027, and by a stretchedH5186 outH5186 armH2220, and by greatH1419 terrorsH4172, accordingH3027 to allH3605 that the LORDH3068 your GodH430 didH6213 for youH834 in EgyptH4714 beforeH5869 your eyesH5869? 35Unto thee it was shewed, that thou mightest knowH3045 that the LORDH3068 he is GodH430; there is noneH369 elseH5750 beside him. 36OutH4480 of heavenH8064 he madeH8085 thee to hearH8085 his voiceH6963, that he might instruct thee: and uponH5921 earthH776 he madeH8085 thee to seeH7200 his greatH1419 fireH784; and thou heardest his wordsH1697 outH4480 of the midstH8432 of the fireH784. 37And becauseH3588 he lovedH157 thy fathersH1, therefore he choseH977 their seedH2233 afterH310 them, and broughtH3318 thee outH3318 with his presenceH6440, with his greatH1419 powerH3581, outH3318 of EgyptH4714; 38to driveH3423 outH4480 nationsH1471 from beforeH6440 thee greaterH1419 and mightierH6099 thanH4480 thou, to bringH935 thee in, to giveH5414 thee their landH776 for an inheritanceH5159, as at this dayH3117. 39KnowH3045 therefore this dayH3117, and lay it to thine heartH3824, that the LORDH3068 he is GodH430 in heavenH8064 aboveH5921 and uponH5921 the earthH776 beneathH8478: there is noneH369 elseH5750. 40And thou shalt keepH8104 his statutesH2706, and his commandmentsH4687, whichH834 I commandH6680 thee this dayH3117, that it may goH3190 wellH3190 with thee, and with thy childrenH1121 afterH310 thee, and that thou mayest prolongH748 thy daysH3117 uponH5921 the landH127, whichH834 the LORDH3068 thy GodH430 giveth thee, for ever. 41Then MosesH4872 separatedH914 threeH7969 citiesH5892 beyondH5676 JordanH3383 toward the sunrisingH4217; 42that the manslayerH7523 might fleeH5127 thither, whichH834 slayeth his neighbour unawares, and hatedH8130 him notH3808 in time pastH8543; and that fleeingH5127 unto one of theseH411 citiesH5892 he might live: 43namely, BezerH1221 in the wildernessH4057, in the plainH4334 countryH776, for the ReubenitesH7206; and RamothH7216 in GileadH1568, for the GaditesH1425; and GolanH1474 in BashanH1316, for the ManassitesH4520. 44And this is the lawH8451 whichH834 MosesH4872 setH7760 beforeH6440 the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478: 45theseH428 are the testimonies, and the statutesH2706, and the judgmentsH4941, whichH834 MosesH4872 spake unto the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478, when they cameH3318 forthH3318 outH3318 of EgyptH4714; 46beyondH5676 JordanH3383, in the valleyH1516 over againstH4714 Beth-peorH1047, in the landH776 of SihonH5511 kingH4428 of the AmoritesH567, who dweltH3427 at HeshbonH2809, whomH834 MosesH4872 and the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478 smoteH5221, when they cameH3318 forthH3318 outH3318 of EgyptH4714: 47and they tookH3423 his landH776 in possessionH3423, and the landH776 of OgH5747 kingH4428 of BashanH1316, the twoH8147 kingsH4428 of the AmoritesH567, whichH834 were beyondH5676 JordanH3383 toward the sunrisingH4217; 48from AroerH6177, whichH834 is on the edgeH8193 of the valleyH5158 of ArnonH769, evenH5704 unto mountH2022 SionH7865 (the sameH1931 is HermonH2768), 49and allH3605 the ArabahH6160 beyondH5676 JordanH3383 eastwardH4217, evenH5704 unto the seaH3220 of the ArabahH6160, underH8478 the slopesH794 of PisgahH6449.
