Matthew 27:22-31
22Pilate said to them, “Then what shall I do with Jesus 1who is called Christ?” They all said, “2Crucify Him!” 23But he said, “Why, what evil has He done?” Yet they kept shouting all the more, saying, “3Crucify Him!”
24Now when Pilate saw that he was accomplishing nothing, but rather that 4a riot was starting, he took water and 5washed his hands in front of the crowd, saying, “I am innocent of 6this Man’s blood; 7you yourselves shall see.” 25And all the people replied, “8His blood shall be on us and on our children!” 26Then he released Barabbas 9for them; but after having Jesus 10flogged, he handed Him over to be crucified.
2711Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into 12the 13Praetorium and gathered the whole Roman 1415cohort to Him. 28And they stripped Him and 16put a red 17cloak on Him. 2918And after twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on His head, and put a 19reed in His right hand; and they knelt down before Him and mocked Him, saying, “20Hail, King of the Jews!” 30And 21they spit on Him, and took the reed and beat Him on the head. 3122And after they had mocked Him, they took the cloak off Him and put His own garments back on Him, and led Him away to crucify Him.
