John 1:19-51
19This is 1the testimony of John, when 2the Jews sent priests and Levites to him 3from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?” 20And he confessed and did not deny; and this is what he confessed: “4I am not the 5Christ.” 21And so they asked him, “What then? Are you 6Elijah?” And he said, “I am not.” “Are you 7the Prophet?” And he answered, “No.” 22Then they said to him, “Who are you? Tell us, so that we may give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?” 23He said, “I am 8the voice of one calling 9out in the wilderness, ‘Make the way of the Lord straight,’ as Isaiah the prophet said.”
24And the messengers had been sent from the Pharisees. 25They asked him, and said to him, “Why then are you baptizing, if you are not the 10Christ, nor Elijah, nor 11the Prophet?” 26John answered them, saying, “12I baptize 13in water, but among you stands One whom you do not know. 27It is 14He who comes after me, of whom I am not worthy even to untie the 15strap of His sandal.” 28These things took place in Bethany 16beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing people.
29The next day he saw Jesus coming to him, and said, “Behold, 17the Lamb of God who 18takes away the sin of the world! 30This is He in behalf of whom I said, ‘19After me is coming a Man who has proved to be 20my superior, 21because He existed before me.’ 31And I did not recognize 22Him, but so that He would be revealed to Israel, I came baptizing 23in water.” 32And John 24testified, saying, “25I have seen the Spirit descending as a dove out of heaven, and He remained upon Him. 33And I did not recognize 26Him, but He who sent me to baptize 27in water said to me, ‘He upon whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining upon Him, 28this is the One who baptizes 29in the Holy Spirit.’ 34And I myself have seen, and have testified that this is 30the 31Son of God.”
35Again 32the next day John was standing 33with two of his disciples, 36and he looked at Jesus as He walked, and said, “Behold, 34the Lamb of God!” 37And the two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus. 38And Jesus turned and saw them following, and said to them, “What are you seeking?” They said to Him, “35Rabbi (which translated means Teacher), where are You staying?” 39He said to them, “Come, and you will see.” So they came and saw where He was staying, and they stayed with Him that day; it was about the 36tenth hour. 4037One of the two who heard John speak, and followed Him, was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. 41He first found his own brother Simon and said to him, “We have found the 38Messiah” (which translated means 39Christ). 42He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon the son of 4041John; you shall be called 42Cephas” (which is translated 4344Peter).
4345The next day He 46decided to go to 47Galilee, and He found 48Philip. And Jesus said to him, “49Follow Me.” 44Now 50Philip was from 51Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. 4552Philip found 53Nathanael and said to him, “We have found Him of whom 54Moses wrote in the Law, and 55the prophets also wrote: Jesus 56the son of Joseph, from 57Nazareth!” 46Nathanael said to him, “58Can anything good be from Nazareth?” 59Philip said to him, “Come and see.” 47Jesus saw Nathanael coming to Him, and said of him, “Here is truly an 60Israelite, in whom there is no deceit!” 48Nathanael said to Him, “How do You know me?” Jesus answered and said to him, “Before 61Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.” 49Nathanael answered Him, “62Rabbi, You are 63the Son of God; You are the 64King of Israel!” 50Jesus answered and said to him, “Because I said to you that I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe? You will see greater things than these.” 51And He said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see 65heaven opened and 66the angels of God ascending and descending on 67the Son of Man.”
