John 1:17-51

17For 1the Law was given through Moses; 2grace and 3truth 4were realized through Jesus Christ. 18 5No one has seen God at any time; 6God the only Son, who is 7in the 8arms of the Father, 9He has 10explained Him.

19This is 11the testimony of John, when 12the Jews sent priests and Levites to him 13from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?” 20And he confessed and did not deny; and this is what he confessed: “14I am not the 15Christ.” 21And so they asked him, “What then? Are you 16Elijah?” And he said, “I am not.” “Are you 17the Prophet?” And he answered, “No.” 22Then they said to him, “Who are you? Tell us, so that we may give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?” 23He said, “I am 18the voice of one calling 19out in the wilderness, ‘Make the way of the Lord straight,’ as Isaiah the prophet said.”

24And the messengers had been sent from the Pharisees. 25They asked him, and said to him, “Why then are you baptizing, if you are not the 20Christ, nor Elijah, nor 21the Prophet?” 26John answered them, saying, “22I baptize 23in water, but among you stands One whom you do not know. 27It is 24He who comes after me, of whom I am not worthy even to untie the 25strap of His sandal.” 28These things took place in Bethany 26beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing people.

29The next day he saw Jesus coming to him, and said, “Behold, 27the Lamb of God who 28takes away the sin of the world! 30This is He in behalf of whom I said, ‘29After me is coming a Man who has proved to be 30my superior, 31because He existed before me.’ 31And I did not recognize 32Him, but so that He would be revealed to Israel, I came baptizing 33in water.” 32And John 34testified, saying, “35I have seen the Spirit descending as a dove out of heaven, and He remained upon Him. 33And I did not recognize 36Him, but He who sent me to baptize 37in water said to me, ‘He upon whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining upon Him, 38this is the One who baptizes 39in the Holy Spirit.’ 34And I myself have seen, and have testified that this is 40the 41Son of God.”

35Again 42the next day John was standing 43with two of his disciples, 36and he looked at Jesus as He walked, and said, “Behold, 44the Lamb of God!” 37And the two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus. 38And Jesus turned and saw them following, and said to them, “What are you seeking?” They said to Him, “45Rabbi (which translated means Teacher), where are You staying?” 39He said to them, “Come, and you will see.” So they came and saw where He was staying, and they stayed with Him that day; it was about the 46tenth hour. 40 47One of the two who heard John speak, and followed Him, was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. 41He first found his own brother Simon and said to him, “We have found the 48Messiah” (which translated means 49Christ). 42He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon the son of 50 51John; you shall be called 52Cephas” (which is translated 53 54Peter).

43 55The next day He 56decided to go to 57Galilee, and He found 58Philip. And Jesus said to him, “59Follow Me.” 44Now 60Philip was from 61Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. 45 62Philip found 63Nathanael and said to him, “We have found Him of whom 64Moses wrote in the Law, and 65the prophets also wrote: Jesus 66the son of Joseph, from 67Nazareth!” 46Nathanael said to him, “68Can anything good be from Nazareth?” 69Philip said to him, “Come and see.” 47Jesus saw Nathanael coming to Him, and said of him, “Here is truly an 70Israelite, in whom there is no deceit!” 48Nathanael said to Him, “How do You know me?” Jesus answered and said to him, “Before 71Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.” 49Nathanael answered Him, “72Rabbi, You are 73the Son of God; You are the 74King of Israel!” 50Jesus answered and said to him, “Because I said to you that I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe? You will see greater things than these.” 51And He said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see 75heaven opened and 76the angels of God ascending and descending on 77the Son of Man.”
