Context of Hosea 5:3
1Hear this, you priests! Pay attention, house of Israel! Listen, you of the house of the king! For the judgment applies to you, Because you have been a trap at Mizpah, And a net spread out on Tabor. 2And the rebels have gone deep in depravity, But I will discipline all of them. I know Ephraim, and Israel is not hidden from Me; Because now, Ephraim, you have been unfaithful, Israel has defiled itself. 4Their deeds will not allow them To return to their God. For a spirit of infidelity is within them, And they do not know the Lord. 5Moreover, the pride of Israel testifies against him, And Israel and Ephraim stumble in their wrongdoing; Judah also has stumbled with them.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 3I know Ephraim - There is much emphasis on the “I.” It is like our, “I have known,” or “I, I, have known.” God had known him all along, if we may so speak. However deep they may have laid their plans of blood, however they would or do hide them from man, and think that no eye seeth them, and say, “Who seeth me? and who knoweth me? - Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 3Israel is defiled: The word translated as defiled often appears in the first five books of the Bible to describe ritual uncleanness. This physical condition prevented a person from worshiping God in the temple (Leviticus 11–15). The prophets used this idea as a metaphor for Israel’s moral uncleanness due to her idolatry (Isaiah 6:5; Micah 2:10).Read the comment
