Andhe cameוַיָּבֹ֣אvai.ya.Vo'H935to him andsaidוַיֹּ֤אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “There were twoשְׁנֵ֣יshe.NeiH8147menH376in oneאֶחָ֔ת'e.ChatH259cityבְּעִ֣ירbe.'IrH5892,the oneאֶחָ֥ד'e.ChadH259richעָשִׁ֖יר'a.ShirH6223and the otherוְאֶחָ֥דve.'e.ChadH259poorרָֽאשׁ׃RashH7326.

2The richלְעָשִׁ֗ירle.'a.ShirH6223manH6223hadהָיָ֛הha.YahH1961a greatמְאֹֽד׃me.'OdH3966manyהַרְבֵּ֥הhar.BehH7235flocksצֹ֥אןtzonH6629and herdsוּבָקָ֖רu.va.KarH1241.

3But the poorוְלָרָ֣שׁve.la.RashH7326man had nothingאֵֽין־ כֹּ֗ל'ein- KolH369 H3605exceptכִּי֩ אִם־ki 'im-H3588 H518oneאַחַ֤ת'a.ChatH259littleקְטַנָּה֙ke.ta.NahH6996eweH3535lambH3535Whichאֲשֶׁ֣ר'a.SherH834he boughtקָנָ֔הka.NahH7069and nourishedוַיְחַיֶּ֕הָvay.chai.Ye.haH2421;And it grewוַתִּגְדַּ֥לva.tig.DalH1431up togetherH3164with him and his childrenבָּנָ֖יוba.NavH1121.It would eatתֹאכַ֜לto.KhalH398of hisbreadמִפִּתּ֨וֹmi.pi.ToH6595and drinkתִשְׁתֶּה֙tish.TehH8354of his cupוּמִכֹּס֤וֹu.mi.ko.SoH3563and lieתִשְׁכָּ֔בtish.KavH7901in his bosomוּבְחֵיק֣וֹu.ve.chei.KoH2436,And was like a daughterכְּבַֽת׃ke.VatH1323to him.

5Then David’sדָּוִ֛דda.VidH1732angerאַ֥ף'afH639burnedוַיִּֽחַר־vai.yi.char-H2734greatlyמְאֹ֑דme.'OdH3966against the manבָּאִ֖ישׁba.'IshH376,and he saidוַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙vai.Yo.merH559to Nathanנָתָ֔ןna.TanH5416, “As the Lordיְהוָ֕הYah.wehH3068livesחַי־chai-H2416,surelyכִּ֣יkiH3588the manהָאִ֖ישׁha.'IshH376who has doneהָעֹשֶׂ֥הha.'o.SehH6213thisH2088deservesבֶן־ven-H1121to dieמָ֔וֶתMa.vetH4194.

6He must makeH7999restitutionH7999for the lambהַכִּבְשָׂ֖הha.kiv.SahH3535fourfoldאַרְבַּעְתָּ֑יִם'ar.ba'.Ta.yimH706,becauseעֵ֗קֶב'E.kevH6118 H834he didעָשָׂה֙'a.SahH6213thisהַזֶּ֔הha.ZehH2088thingהַדָּבָ֣רha.da.VarH1697and hadH2550noלֹֽא־lo'-H3808compassionH2550.”

7Nathanנָתָ֛ןna.TanH5416then saidוַיֹּ֧אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to Davidדָּוִ֖דda.VidH1732, “You are the manהָאִ֑ישׁha.'IshH376!Thusכֹּה־koh-H3541saysאָמַ֨ר'a.MarH559the Lordיְהוָ֜הYah.wehH3068Godאֱלֹהֵ֣י'e.lo.HeiH430of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֗לYis.ra.'ElH3478, ‘It is I who anointedמְשַׁחְתִּ֤יךָֽme.shach.Ti.khaH4886you kingלְמֶ֙לֶךְ֙le.Me.lekhH4428overעַל־'al-H5921Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֔לYis.ra.'ElH3478and it is I who deliveredH4672you from the handמִיַּ֥דmi.YadH3027of Saulשָׁאֽוּל׃sha.'UlH7586.

8I also gaveוָאֶתְּנָ֨הva.'e.te.NahH5414youyour master’sאֲדֹנֶ֗יךָ'a.do.Nei.khaH113houseבֵּ֣יתbeitH1004and your master’sאֲדֹנֶ֙יךָ֙'a.do.Nei.khaH113wivesנְשֵׁ֤יne.SheiH802into yourcareבְּחֵיקֶ֔ךָbe.chei.Ke.chaH2436,and I gaveוָאֶתְּנָ֣הva.'e.te.NahH5414you the houseבֵּ֥יתbeitH1004of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֖לYis.ra.'ElH3478and Judahוִֽיהוּדָ֑הvi.hu.DahH3063;and ifוְאִ֨ם־ve.'Im-H518that had beentoo littleמְעָ֔טme.'AtH4592,I would have addedוְאֹסִ֥פָהve.'o.Si.fahH3254to you many more things like theseH2007!

9Whyמַדּ֜וּעַma.Du.a'H4069have you despisedבָּזִ֣יתָ׀ba.Zi.taH959the wordדְּבַ֣רde.VarH1697of the Lordיְהוָ֗הYah.wehH3068by doingלַעֲשׂ֣וֹתla.'a.SotH6213evilהָרַע֮ha.Ra'H7451in His sightבְּעֵינַי֒be.'ei.noH5869?You have struckH5221downהִכִּ֣יתָhi.Ki.taH5221Uriahאוּרִיָּ֤ה'u.ri.YahH223the Hittiteהַֽחִתִּי֙ha.chi.TiH2850with the swordבַחֶ֔רֶבva.Che.revH2719,have takenלָקַ֥חְתָּla.Kach.taH3947his wifeאִשְׁתּ֔וֹ'ish.ToH802to be your wifeלְאִשָּׁ֑הle.'i.ShahH802,and have killedהָרַ֔גְתָּha.Rag.taH2026him with the swordבְּחֶ֖רֶבbe.Che.revH2719of the sonsבְּנֵ֥יbe.NeiH1121of Ammonעַמּֽוֹן׃a.MonH5983.

11Thusכֹּ֣ה׀kohH3541saysאָמַ֣ר'a.MarH559the Lordיְהוָ֗הYah.wehH3068, ‘BeholdH2009,I will raiseמֵקִ֨יםme.KimH6965up evilH7463againstעָלֶ֤יךָ'a.Lei.khaH5921you from your own householdמִבֵּיתֶ֔ךָmi.bei.Te.khaH1004;I will even takeוְלָקַחְתִּ֤יve.la.kach.TiH3947your wivesנָשֶׁ֙יךָ֙na.Shei.khaH802before your eyesלְעֵינֶ֔יךָle.'ei.Nei.khaH5869and giveוְנָתַתִּ֖יve.na.ta.TiH5414themto your companionלְרֵעֶ֑יךָle.re.'Ei.khaH7453,and he will lieוְשָׁכַב֙ve.sha.KhavH7901with your wivesנָשֶׁ֔יךָna.Shei.khaH802inbroadלְעֵינֵ֖יle.'ei.NeiH5869daylightהַשֶּׁ֥מֶשׁha.She.meshH8121 H2088.

12Indeedכִּ֥יkiH3588you didעָשִׂ֣יתָ'a.Si.taH6213it secretlyבַסָּ֑תֶרva.Sa.terH5643, butI will doאֶעֱשֶׂה֙'e.'e.SehH6213thisהַזֶּ֔הha.ZehH2088thingהַדָּבָ֣רha.da.VarH1697beforeנֶ֥גֶדNe.gedH5048allכָּל־kol-H3605Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֖לYis.ra.'ElH3478, andunderוְנֶ֥גֶדve.Ne.gedH5048the sunהַשָּֽׁמֶשׁ׃ סha.Sha.meshH8121.’”

13Then Davidדָּוִד֙da.VidH1732saidוַיֹּ֤אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to Nathanנָתָ֔ןna.TanH5416, “I have sinnedחָטָ֖אתִיcha.Ta.tiH2398against the Lordלַֽיהוָ֑ה סla.Yah.wehH3068.”And Nathanנָתָ֜ןna.TanH5416saidוַיֹּ֨אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to Davidדָּוִ֗דda.VidH1732, “The Lordיְהוָ֛הYah.wehH3068alsoגַּם־gam-H1571hastakenH5674awayהֶעֱבִ֥ירhe.'e.VirH5674your sinחַטָּאתְךָ֖cha.ta.te.KhaH2403;you shall not dieתָמֽוּת׃ta.MutH4191.

14Howeverאֶ֗פֶס'E.fesH657,becauseכִּֽי־ki-H3588by thisהַזֶּ֑הha.ZehH2088deedבַּדָּבָ֖רba.da.VarH1697you havegivenנִאֵ֤ץni.'EtzH5006occasion to the enemiesH340of the Lordיְהוָ֔הYah.wehH3068to blasphemeנִאַ֙צְתָּ֙ni.'Atz.taH5006,the childהַבֵּ֛ןha.BenH1121alsoגַּ֗םGamH1571that is bornהַיִּלּ֥וֹדhai.yi.LodH3209to you shall surelyמ֥וֹתMotH4191dieיָמֽוּת׃ya.MutH4191.”

Loss of a Child

15So Nathanנָתָ֖ןna.TanH5416wentוַיֵּ֥לֶךְvai.Ye.lekhH1980to his houseבֵּית֑וֹbei.ToH1004.Then the Lordיְהוָ֗הYah.wehH3068struckוַיִּגֹּ֣ףvai.yi.GofH5062the childהַיֶּ֜לֶדhai.Ye.ledH3206that Uriah’sאוּרִיָּ֛ה'u.ri.YahH223widowאֵֽשֶׁת־'e.shet-H802boreיָלְדָ֧הYal.dahH3205to Davidלְדָוִ֖דle.da.VidH1732, so that he was verysickוַיֵּאָנַֽשׁ׃vai.ye.'a.NashH605.

16Davidדָּוִ֛דda.VidH1732therefore inquiredוַיְבַקֵּ֥שׁvay.va.KeshH1245of Godהָאֱלֹהִ֖יםha.'E.lo.HimH430for the childהַנָּ֑עַרha.Na.'arH5288;and Davidדָּוִד֙da.VidH1732fastedוַיָּ֤צָם צ֔וֹםvai.Ya.tzom TzomH6684 H6685and wentוּבָ֥אu.Va'H935andlayוְשָׁכַ֥בve.sha.KhavH7901all nightוְלָ֖ןve.LanH3885on the groundאָֽרְצָה׃'A.re.tzahH776.

17The eldersזִקְנֵ֤יzik.NeiH2205of his householdבֵיתוֹ֙vei.ToH1004stoodוַיָּקֻ֜מוּvai.ya.Ku.muH6965besideעָלָ֔יו'a.LavH5921him in order to raiseלַהֲקִימ֖וֹla.ha.ki.MoH6965him up from the groundהָאָ֑רֶץha.'A.retzH776,but he was unwillingאָבָ֔ה'a.VahH3808 H14and would not eatH1262foodלָֽחֶם׃La.chemH3899with them.

18Then it happenedH1961on the seventhהַשְּׁבִיעִ֖יha.she.vi.'IH7637dayבַּיּ֥וֹםbai.YomH3117that the childהַיָּ֑לֶדhai.Ya.ledH3206diedוַיָּ֣מָתvai.Ya.motH4191.And the servantsעַבְדֵ֨י'av.DeiH5650of Davidדָוִ֜דda.VidH1732were afraidוַיִּֽרְאוּ֩vai.yir.'UH3372to tellלְהַגִּ֥ידle.ha.GidH5046him that the childהַיֶּ֗לֶדhai.Ye.ledH3206was deadמֵ֣תmetH4191,for they saidאָֽמְרוּ֙'a.me.RuH559, “Beholdהִנֵּה֩hi.NehH2009,while the childהַיֶּ֜לֶדhai.Ye.ledH3206was stillaliveחַ֗יChaiH2416,we spokeדִּבַּ֤רְנוּdi.Bar.nuH1696to him and he did not listenשָׁמַ֣עsha.Ma'H8085to our voiceבְּקוֹלֵ֔נוּbe.ko.Le.nuH6963.Howוְאֵ֨יךְve.'EikhH349then can we tellנֹאמַ֥רno.MarH559him that the childהַיֶּ֖לֶדhai.Ye.ledH3206is deadמֵ֥תmetH4191,since he might doוְעָשָׂ֥הve.'a.SahH6213himselfharmH7463!”

19But when Davidדָּוִ֗דda.VidH1732sawוַיַּ֣רְאvai.Yar'H7200that his servantsעֲבָדָיו֙'a.va.DavH5650were whisperingמִֽתְלַחֲשִׁ֔יםmit.la.cha.ShimH3907together, Davidדָּוִ֖דda.VidH1732perceivedוַיָּ֥בֶןvai.Ya.venH995that the childהַיָּ֑לֶדhai.Ya.ledH3206was deadמֵ֣תmetH4191;so Davidדָּוִ֧דda.VidH1732saidוַיֹּ֨אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to his servantsעֲבָדָ֛יו'a.va.DavH5650, “Is the childהַיֶּ֖לֶדhai.Ye.ledH3206deadהֲמֵ֥תha.MetH4191?”And they saidוַיֹּ֥אמְרוּvai.Yo.me.ruH559, “He is deadמֵֽת׃MetH4191.”

20So Davidדָּוִ֨דda.VidH1732aroseוַיָּקָם֩vai.ya.KamH6965from the groundמֵהָאָ֜רֶץme.ha.'A.retzH776,washedוַיִּרְחַ֣ץvai.yir.ChatzH7364,anointedוַיָּ֗סֶךְvai.Ya.sekhH5480himself,and changedוַיְחַלֵּף֙vay.cha.LefH2498his clothesשִׂמְלֹתָ֔יוsim.lo.toH8071;and he cameוַיָּבֹ֥אvai.ya.Vo'H935into the houseבֵית־veit-H1004of the Lordיְהוָ֖הYah.wehH3068andworshipedוַיִּשְׁתָּ֑חוּvai.yish.Ta.chuH7812.Then he cameוַיָּבֹא֙vai.ya.Vo'H935to his own houseבֵּית֔וֹbei.ToH1004,and when he requestedוַיִּשְׁאַ֕לvai.yish.'AlH7592,they setוַיָּשִׂ֥ימוּvai.ya.Si.muH7760foodלֶ֖חֶםLe.chemH3899before him and he ateוַיֹּאכַֽל׃vai.yo.KhalH398.

21Then his servantsעֲבָדָיו֙'a.va.DavH5650saidוַיֹּאמְר֤וּvai.yo.me.RuH559to him, “Whatמָֽה־mah-H4100is thisהַזֶּ֖הha.ZehH2088thingהַדָּבָ֥רha.da.VarH1697that you have doneעָשִׂ֑יתָה'a.Si.tahH6213?Whileבַּעֲב֞וּרba.'a.VurH5668the childהַיֶּ֤לֶדhai.Ye.ledH3206was aliveחַי֙chaiH2416,you fastedצַ֣מְתָּTzam.taH6684and weptוַתֵּ֔בְךְּva.Te.vekH1058;but whenH3512the childהַיֶּ֔לֶדhai.Ye.ledH3206diedמֵ֣תmetH4191,you aroseקַ֖מְתָּKam.taH6965and ateוַתֹּ֥אכַלva.To.khalH398foodלָֽחֶם׃La.chemH3899.”

22He saidוַיֹּ֕אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “While the childהַיֶּ֣לֶדhai.Ye.ledH3206was stillaliveחַ֔יChaiH2416,I fastedצַ֖מְתִּיTzam.tiH6684and weptוָֽאֶבְכֶּ֑הva.'ev.KehH1058;for I saidאָמַ֙רְתִּי֙'a.Mar.tiH559, ‘Whoמִ֣יmiH4310knowsיוֹדֵ֔עַyo.De.a'H3045,the Lordיְהוָ֖הYah.wehH3068may be graciousוְחַנַּ֥נִיye.cha.na.niH2603to me, that the childהַיָּֽלֶד׃hai.Ya.ledH3206may liveH2416.’

23But nowוְעַתָּ֣ה׀ve.'a.TahH6258he has diedמֵ֗תMetH4191;whyלָ֤מָּהLa.mahH4100should I fastצָ֔םTzamH6684?Canהַאוּכַ֥לha.'u.KhalH3201I bringלַהֲשִׁיב֖וֹla.ha.shi.VoH7725him backH7725againע֑וֹדodH5750?I will goהֹלֵ֣ךְho.LekhH1980to him, buthe will not returnיָשׁ֥וּבya.ShuvH7725to me.”

Solomon Born

24Then Davidדָּוִ֗דda.VidH1732comfortedוַיְנַחֵ֣םvay.na.ChemH5162his wifeאִשְׁתּ֔וֹ'ish.ToH802BathshebaH1339,and wentוַיָּבֹ֥אvai.ya.Vo'H935in to her and layוַיִּשְׁכַּ֣בvai.yish.KavH7901with her; and she gaveH3205birthH3205to a sonבֵּ֗ןBenH1121, andhe namedוַתִּקְרָ֤א שְׁמוֹ֙vai.yik.ra' she.MoH7121 H8034him Solomonשְׁלֹמֹ֔הshe.lo.MohH8010.Now the Lordוַיהוָ֖הva.Yah.wehH3068lovedאֲהֵבֽוֹ׃'a.he.VoH157him

25and sentוַיִּשְׁלַ֗חvai.yish.LachH7971wordthroughבְּיַד֙be.YadH3027Nathanנָתָ֣ןna.TanH5416the prophetהַנָּבִ֔יאha.na.Vi'H5030,and he namedוַיִּקְרָ֥א שְׁמ֖וֹvai.yik.Ra' she.MoH7121 H8034himJedidiahיְדִ֣ידְיָ֑הּye.Di.de.YahH3041for the Lord’sיְהוָֽה׃ פYah.wehH3068sakeבַּעֲב֖וּרba.'a.VurH5668.

War Again

26Now Joabיוֹאָ֔בyo.'AvH3097foughtוַיִּלָּ֣חֶםvai.yi.La.chemH3898againstRabbahבְּרַבַּ֖תbe.ra.BatH7237of the sonsבְּנֵ֣יbe.NeiH1121of Ammonעַמּ֑וֹןa.MonH5983and capturedוַיִּלְכֹּ֖דvai.yil.KodH3920the royalהַמְּלוּכָֽה׃ha.me.lu.KhahH4410cityעִ֥יר'irH5892.

27Joabיוֹאָ֛בyo.'AvH3097sentוַיִּשְׁלַ֥חvai.yish.LachH7971messengersמַלְאָכִ֖יםmal.'a.KhimH4397to Davidדָּוִ֑דda.VidH1732and saidוַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙vai.Yo.merH559, “I have foughtנִלְחַ֣מְתִּיnil.Cham.tiH3898against Rabbahבְרַבָּ֔הve.ra.BahH7237,I have evenגַּם־gam-H1571capturedלָכַ֖דְתִּיla.Khad.tiH3920the cityעִ֥יר'irH5892of watersהַמָּֽיִם׃ha.Ma.yimH4325.

28Nowוְעַתָּ֗הve.'a.TahH6258therefore, gatherאֱסֹף֙'e.SofH622the restיֶ֣תֶרYe.terH3499of the peopleהָעָ֔םha.'AmH5971together and campוַחֲנֵ֥הva.cha.NehH2583againstעַל־'al-H5921the cityהָעִ֖ירha.'IrH5892and captureוְלָכְדָ֑הּve.la.khe.DahH3920it, orפֶּן־pen-H6435I will captureאֶלְכֹּ֤ד'el.KodH3920the cityהָעִ֔ירha.'IrH5892myselfאֲנִי֙'a.NiH589and it will be namedוְנִקְרָ֥א שְׁמִ֖יve.nik.Ra' she.MiH7121 H8034afterעָלֶֽיהָ׃'a.Lei.haH5921me.”

29So Davidדָּוִ֛דda.VidH1732gatheredוַיֶּאֱסֹ֥ףvai.ye.'e.SofH622allכָּל־kol-H3605the peopleהָעָ֖םha.'AmH5971and wentוַיֵּ֣לֶךְvai.Ye.lekhH1980to Rabbahרַבָּ֑תָהra.Ba.tahH7237,foughtוַיִּלָּ֥חֶםvai.yi.La.chemH3898against it and capturedוַֽיִּלְכְּדָֽהּ׃Vai.yil.ke.DahH3920it.

30Thenhe tookוַיִּקַּ֣חvai.yi.KachH3947the crownעֲטֶֽרֶת־'a.te.ret-H5850oftheir kingמַלְכָּם֩mal.KamH4428from his headרֹאשׁ֜וֹro.ShoH7218;and its weightוּמִשְׁקָלָ֨הּu.mish.ka.LahH4948wasa talentכִּכַּ֤רki.KarH3603of goldזָהָב֙za.HavH2091, and in it wasa preciousיְקָרָ֔הye.ka.RahH3368stoneוְאֶ֣בֶןve.'E.venH68; and it was placedon David’sדָּוִ֑דda.VidH1732headרֹ֣אשׁroshH7218.And he broughtהוֹצִ֖יאho.Tzi'H3318out the spoilוּשְׁלַ֥לu.she.LalH7998of the cityהָעִ֛ירha.'IrH5892in greatמְאֹֽד׃me.'OdH3966amountsהַרְבֵּ֥הhar.BehH7235.
