Context of Mark 5:41
39And entering in, He said to them, “Why make a commotion and weep? The child has not died, but is asleep.” 40They began laughing at Him. But putting them all out, He took along the child’s father and mother and His own companions, and entered the room where the child was. Taking the child by the hand, He said to her, “Talitha kum!” (which translated means, “Little girl, I say to you, get up!”). 42Immediately the girl got up and began to walk, for she was twelve years old. And immediately they were completely astounded. 43And He gave them strict orders that no one should know about this, and He said that something should be given her to eat.

Commentaries on Mark 5:41
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 41Talitha cumi - , This is mere Syriac, the proper translation of which the evangelist has given. The Codex Bezae has a very odd and unaccountable reading here, ̔. , My master. Damsel arise. Suidas quotes this place under the word thus . is the reading of several ancient MSS., but it is certainly a faulty one.Read the comment

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 35-43Verses 35-43 We may suppose Jairus hesitating whether he should ask Christ to go on or not, when told that his daughter was dead. But have we not as much occasion for the grace of God, and the comfort of his Spirit, for the prayers of our ministers and Christian friends, when death is in the house, as when sickness is there? Faith is the only remedy against grief and fear at such a time. Believe the resurrection, then fear not. He raised the dead child to…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 41Mark translates Talitha koum for his Greek-speaking audience as "Little girl, I say to you, get up!" These Aramaic words are not magical. They are simply what Jesus said when he raised the girl. Aramaic was his native language. Mark likely learned the story in Aramaic while in Jerusalem.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 4141. And he took the damsel by the hand--as He did Peter's mother-in-law (Mr 1:31). and said unto her, Talitha cumi--The words are Aramaic, or Syro-Chaldaic, the then language of Palestine. Mark loves to give such wonderful words just as they were spoken. See Mr 7:34; 14:36.Read the comment
