Context of Mark 5:41
39And entering in he says to them, Why do ye make a tumult and weep? the child has not died, but sleeps. 40And they derided him. But he, having put [them] all out, takes with [him] the father of the child, and the mother, and those that were with him, and enters in where the child was lying. And having laid hold of the hand of the child, he says to her, Talitha koumi, which is, interpreted, Damsel, I say to thee, Arise. 42And immediately the damsel arose and walked, for she was twelve years old. And they were astonished with great astonishment. 43And he charged them much that no one should know this; and he desired that [something] should be given her to eat.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 41Talitha cumi - , This is mere Syriac, the proper translation of which the evangelist has given. - Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 35-43Verses 35-43 We may suppose Jairus hesitating whether he should ask Christ to go on or not, when told that his daughter was dead. But have we not as much occasion for the grace of God, and the comfort of his Spirit, for the prayers of our ministers and Christian friends, when death is in the house, as when sickness is there? Faith is the only remedy against grief and fear at such a time. Believe the resurrection, then fear not. He raised the dead child to…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 41Mark translates Talitha koum for his Greek-speaking audience as "Little girl, I say to you, get up!" These Aramaic words are not magical. They are simply what Jesus said when he raised the girl. Aramaic was his native language. Mark likely learned the story in Aramaic while in Jerusalem.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 4141. And he took the damsel by the hand--as He did Peter's mother-in-law (Mr 1:31). and said unto her, Talitha cumi--The words are Aramaic, or Syro-Chaldaic, the then language of Palestine. Mark loves to give such wonderful words just as they were spoken. See Mr 7:34; 14:36.Read the comment
