Isaiah 38:2-20

Then Hezekiah turned his face to the wall and prayed to the Lord, 3and said, “1Remember now, O Lord, I beseech You, how I have 2walked before You in truth and with a 3whole heart, and 4have done what is good in Your sight.” And Hezekiah 5wept 6bitterly.

Then the word of the Lord came to Isaiah, saying, 5“Go and say to Hezekiah, ‘Thus says the Lord, the God of your father David, “I have heard your prayer, I have seen your tears; behold, I will add 7fifteen years to your 8life. 6I will 9deliver you and this city from the hand of the king of Assyria; and I will defend this city.”’

“This shall be the 10sign to you from the Lord, that the Lord will do this thing that He has spoken: 8Behold, I will 11cause the shadow on the stairway, which has gone down with the sun on the stairway of Ahaz, to go back ten steps.” So the 12sun’s shadow went back ten steps on the stairway on which it had gone down.

A writing of Hezekiah king of Judah after his illness and 13recovery:10I said, “14In the middle of my 15life I am to enter the 16gates of Sheol; I am to be 17deprived of the rest of my years.”11I said, “I will not see the Lord, The Lord 18in the land of the living; I will look on man no more among the inhabitants of the world.12Like a shepherd’s 19tent my dwelling is pulled up and removed from me; As a 20weaver I 21rolled up my life. He 22cuts me off from the loom; From 23day until night You make an end of me.13I composed my soul until morning. 24Like a lion--so He 25breaks all my bones, From 26day until night You make an end of me.1427Like a swallow, like a crane, so I twitter; I 28moan like a dove; My 29eyes look wistfully to the heights; O Lord, I am oppressed, be my 30security.

“31What shall I say? 32For He has spoken to me, and He Himself has done it; I will 33wander about all my years because of the 34bitterness of my soul.16O Lord, 35by these things men live, And in all these is the life of my spirit; 3637O restore me to health and 38let me live!17Lo, for my own welfare I had great bitterness; It is You who has 3940kept my soul from the pit of 41nothingness, For You have 42cast all my sins behind Your back.18For 43Sheol cannot thank You, Death cannot praise You; Those who go down 44to the pit cannot hope for Your faithfulness.19It is the 45living who give thanks to You, as I do today; A 46father tells his sons about Your faithfulness.20The Lord will surely save me; So we will 47play my songs on stringed instruments 48All the days of our life 49at the house of the Lord.”
