Ruth 2

1Now NaomiH5281 had a relativeH3045 on her husband’s sideH376, a prominentH1368 manH376 of noble characterH2428 from the clanH4940 of ElimelechH458, whose nameH8034 was BoazH1162.

2And RuthH7327 the MoabitessH4125H413 saidH559 to NaomiH5281, “PleaseH4994 let me goH1980 into the fieldsH7704 and gleanH3950 heads of grainH7641 afterH310 someone in whoseH834 sightH5869 I may findH4672 favorH2580.”

“Go aheadH1980, my daughterH1323,” Naomi repliedH559.

3So Ruth departedH1980 and went outH935 into the fieldH7704 and gleanedH3950 afterH310 the harvestersH7114. And she happenedH7136 to comeH4745 to the partH2513 of the fieldH7704 belonging to BoazH1162, whoH834 was from the clanH4940 of ElimelechH458.

4Just thenH2009 BoazH1162 arrivedH935 fromH1035 BethlehemH1035 and saidH559 to the harvestersH7114, “The LORDH3068 be with youH5973.”

“The LORDH3068 bless youH1288,” they repliedH559.

5And BoazH1162 askedH559 the foremanH5288H5324 ofH5921 his harvestersH7114, “WhoseH4310 young womanH5291 is thisH2063?”

6The foremanH5288H5324H5921H7114H559 answeredH6030, “SheH1931 is the MoabitessH4125H5291 who returnedH7725 withH5973 NaomiH5281 from the landH7704 of MoabH4124. 7She has saidH559, ‘PleaseH4994 let me gleanH3950 and gatherH622 among the sheavesH6016 afterH310 the harvestersH7114.’ So she came outH935 and has continuedH5975 fromH227 morningH1242 untilH5704 nowH6258, exceptH2088 that she restedH3427 a short timeH4592 in the shelterH1004.”

8Then BoazH1162 saidH559 toH413 RuthH7327, “ListenH8085, my daughterH1323. Do notH408 goH1980 and gleanH3950 in anotherH312 fieldH7704, andH1571 do notH3808 go awayH5674 from thisH2088 place, but stay hereH3541 closeH1692 toH5973 my servant girlsH5291. 9Let your eyesH5869 be on the fieldH7704 they are harvestingH7114, and follow alongH1980 afterH310 these girls. IndeedH3808, I have orderedH6680 the young menH5288 notH1115 to touch youH5060. And when you are thirstyH6770, goH1980H413 and drinkH8354 fromH834 the jarsH3627 the young menH5288 have filledH7579.”

10At this, she fellH5307 onH5921 her faceH6440, bowing lowH7812 to the groundH776, and saidH559 to himH413, “WhyH4069 have I foundH4672 such favorH2580 in your eyesH5869 that you should take notice of meH5234, even though IH595 am a foreignerH5237?”

11BoazH1162 repliedH6030H559, “I have been made fully awareH5046 of allH3605 you have doneH6213 forH854 your mother-in-lawH2545 sinceH310 the deathH4194 of your husbandH376, how you leftH5800 your fatherH1 and motherH517 and the landH776 of your birthH4138, and how you cameH1980 toH413 a peopleH5971 you did notH3808 knowH3045 beforeH8543H8032. 12May the LORDH3068 repayH7999 your workH6467, and may you receiveH1961 a richH8003 rewardH4909 fromH5973 the LORDH3068, the GodH430 of IsraelH3478, underH8478 whoseH834 wingsH3671 you have takenH935 refugeH2620.”

13“My lordH113,” she saidH559, “may I continue to findH4672 favorH2580 in your eyesH5869, forH3588 you have comfortedH5162H3588 and spokenH1696 kindlyH3820 toH5921 your maidservantH8198, though IH595 amH1961 notH3808 like oneH259 of your servant girlsH8198.”

14At mealtimeH6256H400 BoazH1162 saidH559 to her, “Come overH5066 hereH1988; haveH398 someH4480 breadH3899 and dipH2881 itH6595 into the vinegar sauceH2558.” So she sat downH3427 besideH6654 the harvestersH7114, and he offeredH6642 her roasted grainH7039, and she ateH398 and was satisfiedH7646 and had some left overH3498.

15When Ruth got upH6965 to gleanH3950, BoazH1162 orderedH6680 his young menH5288H559, “Even ifH1571 she gathersH3950 amongH996 the sheavesH6016, do notH3808 insult herH3637. 16RatherH1571, pull outH7997 for her some stalks fromH4480 the bundlesH6653 and leave themH5800 for her to gatherH3950. Do notH3808 rebukeH1605 her.”

17So Ruth gathered grainH3950 in the fieldH7704 untilH5704 eveningH6153. And when she beat outH2251 whatH834 she had gleanedH3950, it wasH1961 about an ephahH374 of barleyH8184.1 18She picked up the grainH5375 and went intoH935 the townH5892, where her mother-in-lawH2545 sawH7200 whatH834 she had gleanedH3950. And she brought outH3318 whatH834 she had savedH3498 from her mealH7648 and gave itH5414 to Naomi.

19Then her mother-in-lawH2545 askedH559 her, “WhereH375 did you gleanH3950 todayH3117, and whereH575 did you workH6213? BlessedH1288 beH1961 the man who noticed youH5234.”

So she toldH5046 her mother-in-lawH2545 whereH834 she had workedH6213. “The nameH8034 of the manH376 I workedH6213 withH5973 todayH3117 is BoazH1162,” she saidH559.

20Then NaomiH5281 saidH559 to her daughter-in-lawH3618, “May heH1931 be blessedH1288 by the LORDH3068, whoH834 has notH3808 withdrawnH5800 His kindnessH2617 fromH854 the livingH2416H854 or the deadH4191.” NaomiH5281 continuedH559, “The manH376 is a close relativeH7138. HeH1931 is one of our kinsman-redeemersH1350.2”

21Then RuthH7327 the MoabitessH4125 saidH559, “He alsoH1571H3588 told meH559H413, ‘StayH1692 withH5973 my young menH5288 untilH5704H518 they have finished gatheringH3615 allH3605 my harvestH7105.’”

22And NaomiH5281 saidH559 toH413 her daughter-in-lawH3618 RuthH7327, “My daughterH1323H3588, it is goodH2896 for you to workH3318 withH5973 his young womenH5291, so that nothingH3808 will happenH6293 to you in anotherH312 fieldH7704.”

23So Ruth stayed closeH1692 to the servant girlsH5291 of BoazH1162 to gleanH3950 grain untilH5704 the barleyH8184H7105 and wheatH2406 harvestsH7105 were finishedH3615. And she livedH3427 withH854 her mother-in-lawH2545.

Notes

  1. 1. Ruth 2:17 An ephah is approximately 20 dry quarts or 22 liters (probably about 29 pounds or 13.2 kilograms of barley). ↩
  2. 2. Ruth 2:20 The Hebrew word for kinsman-redeemer or guardian-redeemer is a legal term for the kinsman who redeems or vindicates a relative; see Leviticus 25:25–55. ↩
