Daniel 4

1KingH4430 NebuchadnezzarH5020,

To the peopleH5972 of everyH3606 nationH524 and languageH3961 whoH1768 dwellH1753 in allH3606 the earthH772:

May your prosperityH8001 be multipliedH7680. 2I am pleasedH8232H6925 to declareH2324 the signsH852 and wondersH8540 thatH1768 the Most HighH5943 GodH426 has performedH5648 for meH5974.

3HowH4101 greatH7260 are His signsH852,howH4101 mightyH8624 His wondersH8540!His kingdomH4437 is an eternalH5957 kingdomH4437;His dominion enduresH7985 fromH5974 generationH1859 to generationH1859.

Nebuchadnezzar’s Dream of a Great Tree

4IH576, NebuchadnezzarH5020, wasH1934 at easeH7954 in my houseH1005 and flourishingH7487 in my palaceH1965. 5I hadH2370 a dreamH2493, and it frightened meH1763; while I was inH5922 my bedH4903, the imagesH2031 and visionsH2376 in my mindH7217 alarmed meH927. 6SoH4481 I issuedH7761 a decreeH2942 that allH3606 the wise menH2445 of BabylonH895 be broughtH5954 before meH6925 toH1768 interpretH6591 the dreamH2493 for meH3046. 7WhenH116 the magiciansH2749, enchantersH826, astrologersH3779,1 and divinersH1505 came inH5954, IH576H6925 told themH560 the dreamH2493, but they could notH3809 interpret itH6591 for me.

8But atH5705 lastH318, into my presenceH6925 cameH5954 DanielH1841 (whoseH1768 name isH8036 BelteshazzarH1096 after the nameH8036 of my godH426, and in whomH1768 is the spiritH7308 of the holyH6922 godsH426). And I told himH560 the dreamH2493H6925: 9“O BelteshazzarH1096, chiefH7229 of the magiciansH2749, IH576 knowH3046 thatH1768 the spiritH7308 of the holyH6922 godsH426 is in you and thatH3606 noH3809 mysteryH7328 bafflesH598 you. So explain to meH560 the visionsH2376 I sawH2370 in my dreamH2493, and their interpretationH6591. 10In these visionsH2376 of my mindH7217 as I was lyingH5922 in bedH4903, I saw thisH2370 come to passH1934:

There wasH431 a treeH363 in the midstH1459 of the landH772,and its heightH7314 was greatH7690.11The treeH363 grew largeH7236 and strongH8631;its topH7314 reachedH4291 the skyH8065,and it was visibleH2379to the endsH5491H3606 of the earthH772.12Its leavesH6074 were beautifulH8209,its fruitH4 was abundantH7690,and upon it was foodH4203 for allH3606.Under itH8460 the beastsH2423 of the fieldH1251 found shelterH2927,in its branchesH6056 the birdsH6853 of the airH8065 nestedH1753,and from itH4481 everyH3606 creatureH1321 was fedH2110.

13As I layH5922 on my bedH4903H431, I also sawH2370H1934 in the visionsH2376 of my mindH7217 a watcherH5894,2 a holy oneH6922, coming downH5182 fromH4481 heavenH8065. 14He called outH7123 in a loud voiceH2429H3652H560:

‘Cut downH1414 the treeH363 and chop offH7113 its branchesH6056;strip offH5426 its leavesH6074 and scatterH921 its fruitH4.Let the beastsH2423 fleeH5111 fromH4481 under itH8460,and the birdsH6853 fromH4481 its branchesH6056.15ButH1297 leaveH7662 the stumpH6136 with its rootsH8330 in the groundH772,with a bandH613 ofH1768 ironH6523 and bronze around itH5174,in the tender grassH1883 ofH1768 the fieldH1251.
Let him be drenchedH6647 with the dewH2920 of heavenH8065and grazeH2508 withH5974 the beastsH2423 on the grassH6211 of the earthH772.16Let his mindH3825 be changedH8133 fromH4481 that of a manH606,and let him be givenH3052 the mindH3825 of a beastH2423till sevenH7655 timesH5732 pass himH2499 byH5922.17This decisionH6600 is the decreeH1510 of the watchersH5894,the verdictH7595 declaredH3983 by the holy onesH6922,so thatH5705H1701H1768 the livingH2417 will knowH3046thatH1768 the Most HighH5943 rulesH7990 over the kingdomH4437 of mankindH606and gives itH5415 to whomH4479H1768 He wishesH6634,settingH6966 over itH5922 the lowliestH8215 of menH606.’

18ThisH1836 is the dreamH2493 that IH576, KingH4430 NebuchadnezzarH5020, sawH2370. NowH607, BelteshazzarH1096, tell meH560 the interpretationH6591, becauseH6903H1768 noneH3809 of the wise menH2445 of my kingdomH4437 canH3202 interpret itH6591 for meH3046. But youH607 are ableH3546, becauseH1768 the spiritH7308 of the holyH6922 godsH426 is in you.”

Daniel Interprets the Second Dream

19ForH116 aH2298 timeH8160, DanielH1841, whoH1768 was also known asH8036 BelteshazzarH1096, was perplexedH8075, and his thoughtsH7476 alarmed himH927.

So the kingH4430H560 saidH6032, “BelteshazzarH1096, do notH409 let the dreamH2493 or its interpretationH6591 alarm youH927.”

“My lordH4756H560,” repliedH6032 BelteshazzarH1096, “may the dreamH2493 apply to those who hate youH8131, and its interpretationH6591 to your enemiesH6146!

20The treeH363 you sawH2370 thatH1768 grew largeH7236 and strongH8631, whose topH7314 reachedH4291 the skyH8065 and was visibleH2379 to allH3606 the earthH772, 21whose foliageH6074 was beautifulH8209 and whose fruitH4 was abundantH7690, providing foodH4203 for allH3606, under whichH8460 the beastsH2423 of the fieldH1251 livedH1753, and in whose branchesH6056 the birdsH6853 of the airH8065 nestedH7932— 22youH607, O kingH4430, areH1932H1768 that tree! For you have become greatH7236 and strongH8631; your greatnessH7238 has grownH7236 to reachH4291 the skyH8065, and your dominionH7985 extends to the endsH5491 of the earthH772.

23AndH1768 you, O kingH4430, sawH2370 a watcherH5894, a holy oneH6922, coming downH5182 fromH4481 heavenH8065 and sayingH560:

‘Cut downH1414 the treeH363 and destroy itH2255,butH1297 leaveH7662 the stumpH6136 with its rootsH8330 in the groundH772,with a bandH613 ofH1768 ironH6523 and bronzeH5174 around it,in the tender grassH1883 ofH1768 the fieldH1251.
Let him be drenchedH6647 with the dewH2920 of heavenH8065,and grazeH2508 withH5974 the beastsH2423 of the fieldH1251tillH5705H1768 sevenH7655 timesH5732 pass himH2499 byH5922.’

24ThisH1836 is the interpretationH6591, O kingH4430, and this is the decreeH1510 that the Most HighH5943H1932 has issuedH4291 againstH5922 my lordH4756 the kingH4430:

25You will be driven awayH2957 fromH4481 mankindH606, and your dwellingH4070 will beH1934 withH5974 the beastsH2423 of the fieldH1251. You will feed onH2939 grassH6211 like an oxH8450 and be drenchedH6647 with the dewH2920 of heavenH8065, and sevenH7655 timesH5732 shall passH2499 you byH5922, untilH5705H1768 you acknowledgeH3046 thatH1768 the Most HighH5943 rulesH7990 over the kingdomH4437 of mankindH606 and gives itH5415 to whomH4479H1768 He wishesH6634.

26As forH1768 the commandH560 to leaveH7662 the stumpH6136 ofH1768 the treeH363 with its rootsH8330, your kingdomH4437 will be restoredH7011 to youH4481 as soon asH1768 you acknowledgeH3046 thatH1768 HeavenH8065 rulesH7990. 27ThereforeH2006, may my adviceH4431 be pleasingH8232 to youH5922, O kingH4430. Break awayH6562 from your sinsH2408 by doing what is rightH6665, and from your iniquitiesH5758 by showing mercyH2604 to the oppressedH6033. PerhapsH2006 there will beH1934 an extensionH754 of your prosperityH7963.”

The Second Dream Fulfilled

28AllH3606 this happenedH4291 toH5922 KingH4430 NebuchadnezzarH5020. 29TwelveH8648H6236 monthsH3393 laterH7118, as he wasH1934 walkingH1981 onH5922 the roof of the royal palaceH1965H4437 ofH1768 BabylonH895, 30the kingH4430H560 exclaimedH6032, “Is thisH1668H1932 notH3809 BabylonH895 the GreatH7229, whichH1768 I myselfH576 have builtH1124 as a royalH4437 residenceH1005 by the mightH8632 of my powerH2632 and for the gloryH3367 of my majestyH1923?”

31While the wordsH4406 were stillH5751 in the king’sH4430 mouthH6433, a voiceH7032 cameH5308 fromH4481 heavenH8065: “It is decreedH560 to you, KingH4430 NebuchadnezzarH5020, that the kingdomH4437 has departedH5709 from youH4481. 32You will be driven awayH2957 fromH4481 mankindH606 to liveH4070 withH5974 the beastsH2423 of the fieldH1251, and you will feed onH2939 grassH6211 like an oxH8450. And sevenH7655 timesH5732 will passH2499 you byH5922, untilH5705H1768 you acknowledgeH3046 thatH1768 the Most HighH5943 rulesH7990 over the kingdomH4437 of mankindH606 and gives itH5415 to whomH4479H1768 He wishesH6634.”

33At that momentH8160 the sentenceH4406 againstH5922 NebuchadnezzarH5020 was fulfilledH5487. He was driven awayH2957 fromH4481 mankindH606. He ateH399 grassH6211 like an oxH8450, and his bodyH1655 was drenchedH6647 with the dewH2920 of heavenH8065, untilH5705H1768 his hairH8177 grewH7236 like the feathers of an eagleH5403 and his nailsH2953 like the claws of a birdH6853.

Nebuchadnezzar Restored

34But at the endH7118 of those daysH3118 IH576, NebuchadnezzarH5020, looked upH5870H5191 to heavenH8065, and my sanityH4486 was restoredH8421 to meH5922. Then I praisedH1289 the Most HighH5943, and I honoredH7624 and glorifiedH1922H1768 Him who livesH2417 foreverH5957:

“For His dominionH7985 is an everlastingH5957 dominionH7985,and His kingdomH4437 endures fromH5974 generationH1859 to generationH1859.35AllH3606 the peoplesH1753 of the earthH772are countedH2804 as nothingH3809,and He doesH5648 as He pleasesH6634with the armyH2429 of heavenH8065and the peoplesH1753 of the earthH772.There isH383 noH3809 one whoH1768 can restrainH4223 His handH3028or sayH560 to Him, ‘WhatH4101 have You doneH5648?’”

36At the same timeH2166 my sanityH4486 was restoredH8421, my honorH1923 and splendorH2122 returnedH8421 to meH5922 for the gloryH3367 of my kingdomH4437. My advisersH1907 and noblesH7261 sought me outH1156, and I was restoredH8627 toH5922 my throneH4437, and surpassingH3493 greatnessH7238 was addedH3255 to me. 37NowH3705 IH576, NebuchadnezzarH5020, praiseH7624 and exaltH7313 and glorifyH1922 the KingH4430 of heavenH8065, forH1768 allH3606 His worksH4567 are trueH7187 and all His waysH735 are justH1780. And He is ableH3202 to humbleH8214 thoseH1768 who walkH1981 in prideH1467.
