2 Samuel 17
Revised Version 1895
1Moreover AhithophelH302 saidH559 unto AbsalomH53, LetH4994 meH413 nowH4994 chooseH977 outH413 twelveH6240 thousandH505 menH376, and I will ariseH6965 and pursueH7291 afterH310 DavidH1732 this nightH3915: 2and I will comeH935 uponH5921 him whileH1931 he is wearyH3023 and weakH3605 handedH3027, and will makeH2729 him afraidH2729: and allH3605 the peopleH5971 that are with him shall fleeH5127; and I will smiteH5221 the kingH4428 onlyH905: 3and I will bringH7725 backH7725 allH3605 the peopleH5971 unto thee: the manH376 whomH834 thou seekest is as ifH834 allH3605 returnedH7725: soH1961 allH3605 the peopleH5971 shall be in peaceH7965. 4And the sayingH1697 pleasedH5869 AbsalomH53 well, and allH3605 the eldersH2205 of IsraelH3478. 5Then saidH559 AbsalomH53, CallH7121 nowH4994 HushaiH2365 the ArchiteH757 also, and letH4994 usH4994 hearH8085 likewise whatH4100 he saith. 6And when HushaiH2365 was comeH935 to AbsalomH53, AbsalomH53 spake unto him, sayingH559, AhithophelH302 hath spokenH1696 afterH413 this mannerH1697: shall weH518 doH6213 afterH413 his sayingH559? ifH518 notH369, speakH1696 thou. 7And HushaiH2365 saidH559 unto AbsalomH53, The counselH6098 that AhithophelH302 hath givenH3289 this time is notH3808 goodH2896. 8HushaiH2365 saidH559 moreover, Thou knowest thy fatherH1 and his menH376, that they be mightyH1368 menH376, and they be chafed in their minds, as a bearH1677 robbed of herH559 whelps in the fieldH7704: and thy fatherH1 is a manH376 of warH4421, and will notH3808 lodge with the peopleH5971. 9BeholdH2009, he is hidH2244 nowH6258 in someH259 pitH6354, or in someH259 otherH259 placeH4725: and it will comeH1961 to passH1961, when someH259 of them be fallenH5307 at the firstH259, that whosoever heareth it will sayH559, There is a slaughterH4046 among the peopleH5971 that followH310 AbsalomH53. 10And evenH1571 he that is valiantH2428, whoseH834 heartH3820 is as the heartH3820 of a lionH738, shall utterly meltH4549: for allH3605 IsraelH3478 knoweth that thy fatherH1 is a mightyH1368 manH1368, and they whichH834 be with him are valiantH2428 menH1368. 11But I counselH3289 that allH3605 IsraelH3478 be gatheredH622 togetherH622 unto thee, from DanH1835 evenH5704 to Beer-sheba, as the sandH2344 that is by the seaH3220 for multitudeH7230; and that thou goH1980 to battleH7128 in thine ownH6440 personH1980. 12SoH3808 shall weH834 comeH935 uponH5921 him in someH376 placeH4725 whereH834 he shall be foundH4672, and weH834 will light uponH5921 him as the dewH2919 falleth on the groundH127: and of him and of allH3605 the menH376 that are with him weH834 will notH3808 leaveH5117 soH3808 muchH834 as one. 13MoreoverH1571, ifH518 he be gotten intoH413 a cityH5892, then shall allH3605 IsraelH3478 bringH5375 ropesH2256 to that cityH5892, and weH834 will draw it intoH413 the riverH5704, untilH5704 there be notH3808 one small stoneH834 foundH4672 there. 14And AbsalomH53 and allH3605 the menH376 of IsraelH3478 saidH559, The counselH6098 of HushaiH2365 the ArchiteH757 is betterH2896 thanH2896 the counselH6098 of AhithophelH302. For the LORDH3068 had ordainedH6680 to defeat the goodH2896 counselH6098 of AhithophelH302, to the intent that the LORDH3068 might bringH935 evilH7451 uponH935 AbsalomH53. 15Then saidH559 HushaiH2365 unto ZadokH6659 and to AbiatharH54 the priestsH3548. Thus and thus did AhithophelH302 counselH3289 AbsalomH53 and the eldersH2205 of IsraelH3478; and thus and thus have I counselled. 16NowH6258 therefore sendH7971 quicklyH4120, and tellH5046 DavidH1732, sayingH559, Lodge notH408 this nightH3915 at the fordsH6160 of the wildernessH4057, but in anyH3605 wise passH5674 over; lestH6435 the kingH4428 be swallowedH1104 upH1104, and allH3605 the peopleH5971 that are with him. 17NowH3588 JonathanH3083 and AhimaazH290 stayedH5975 by En-rogelH5883; and a maidservantH8198 used to goH1980 and tellH5046 them; and they wentH1980 and toldH5046 kingH4428 DavidH1732: for they might notH3808 be seenH7200 to comeH935 intoH935 the cityH5892. 18But a ladH5288 sawH7200 them, and toldH5046 AbsalomH53: and they wentH935 bothH8147 of them awayH935 quicklyH4120, and cameH935 to the houseH1004 of a manH376 in BahurimH980, who had a wellH875 in his courtH2691; and they wentH935 downH3381 thither. 19And the womanH802 tookH3947 and spreadH6566 the coveringH4539 over the well’sH875 mouthH6440, and strewed bruised corn thereonH5921; and nothingH3808 was knownH3045. 20And Absalom’sH53 servantsH5650 cameH935 to the womanH802 to the houseH1004; and they saidH559, WhereH346 are AhimaazH290 and JonathanH3083? And the womanH802 saidH559 unto them, They be goneH935 over the brookH4323 of waterH4325. And when they had soughtH1245 and could notH3808 findH4672 them, they returnedH7725 to JerusalemH3389. 21And it cameH1961 to passH5674, afterH310 they were departed, that they cameH1961 upH5927 outH5921 of the wellH875, and wentH5927 and toldH5046 kingH4428 DavidH1732; and they saidH559 unto DavidH1732, AriseH6965 ye, and passH5674 quicklyH4120 over the waterH4325: for thusH3602 hath AhithophelH302 counselled againstH5921 youH3588. 22Then DavidH1732 aroseH6965, and allH3605 the peopleH5971 that were with him, and they passedH5674 over JordanH3383: by the morningH1242 lightH216 there lacked notH3808 one of them that was notH3808 goneH3808 over JordanH3383. 23And when AhithophelH302 sawH7200 that his counselH6098 was notH3808 followed, he saddledH2280 his ass, and aroseH6965, and gat him homeH1004, unto his cityH5892, and setH6965 his houseH1004 in orderH6680, and hanged himselfH413; and he diedH4191, and was buriedH6912 in the sepulchre of his fatherH1. 24Then DavidH1732 cameH935 to MahanaimH4266. And AbsalomH53 passedH5674 over JordanH3383, he and allH3605 the menH376 of IsraelH3478 with him. 25And AbsalomH53 setH7760 AmasaH6021 over the hostH6635 insteadH8478 of JoabH3097. NowH935 AmasaH6021 was the sonH1121 of a manH376, whoseH834 nameH8034 was IthraH3501 the IsraeliteH3481, that wentH935 in to Abigal the daughterH1323 of NahashH5176, sisterH269 to ZeruiahH6870 Joab’sH3097 motherH517. 26And IsraelH3478 and AbsalomH53 pitchedH2583 in the landH776 of GileadH1568. 27And it cameH935 to passH935, when DavidH1732 was comeH935 to MahanaimH4266, that ShobiH7629 the sonH1121 of NahashH5176 of RabbahH7237 of the childrenH1121 of AmmonH5983, and MachirH4353 the sonH1121 of AmmielH5988 of Lo-debarH3810, and BarzillaiH1271 the GileaditeH1569 of RogelimH7274, 28brought bedsH4904, and basons, and earthen vesselsH3627, and wheatH2406, and barleyH8184, and mealH7058, and parchedH7039 corn, and beansH6321, and lentilsH5742, and parchedH7039 pulse, 29and honeyH1706, and butterH2529, and sheepH6629, and cheeseH8194 of kine, for DavidH1732, and for the peopleH5971 that were with him, to eatH398: for they saidH559, The peopleH5971 is hungryH7457, and wearyH5889, and thirstyH6771, in the wildernessH4057.
