2 Samuel 18
Revised Version 1895
1And DavidH1732 numberedH6485 the peopleH5971 that were with him, and setH7760 captainsH8269 of thousandsH505 and captainsH8269 of hundredsH3967 over them. 2And DavidH1732 sentH7971 forthH3318 the peopleH5971, a thirdH7992 partH3027 underH3027 the handH3027 of JoabH3097, and a thirdH7992 partH3027 underH3027 the handH3027 of AbishaiH52 the sonH1121 of ZeruiahH6870, Joab’sH3097 brotherH251, and a thirdH7992 partH3027 underH3027 the handH3027 of IttaiH863 the GittiteH1663. And the kingH4428 saidH559 unto the peopleH5971, I will surelyH3318 goH3318 forthH3318 with youH7971 myselfH589 also. 3But the peopleH5971 saidH559, Thou shalt notH3808 goH3318 forthH3318: for ifH518 weH3588 fleeH5127 awayH5127, they will notH3808 care for usH413; neitherH3808 ifH518 halfH2677 of usH413 dieH4191, will they care for usH413: but thou art worth tenH6235 thousandH505 of usH413: therefore nowH6258 it is betterH2896 that thou be readyH6258 to succour usH413 outH3318 of the cityH5892. 4And the kingH4428 saidH559 unto them, WhatH834 seemeth youH834 bestH3190 I will doH6213. And the kingH4428 stoodH5975 by the gateH8179 sideH3027, and allH3605 the peopleH5971 wentH3381 outH413 by hundredsH3967 and by thousandsH505. 5And the kingH4428 commandedH6680 JoabH3097 and AbishaiH52 and IttaiH863, sayingH559, Deal gentlyH328 for my sakeH5921 with the youngH5288 manH5288, evenH853 with AbsalomH53. And allH3605 the peopleH5971 heardH8085 when the kingH4428 gaveH6680 allH3605 the captainsH8269 chargeH5921 concerning AbsalomH53. 6SoH1961 the peopleH5971 wentH3318 outH3318 intoH1961 the fieldH7704 againstH7125 IsraelH3478: and the battleH4421 was in the forestH3293 of EphraimH669. 7And the peopleH5971 of IsraelH3478 were smitten there beforeH6440 the servantsH5650 of DavidH1732, and there was a greatH1419 slaughterH4046 there that dayH3117 of twentyH6242 thousandH505 menH5971. 8For the battleH4421 was there spreadH6327 over the faceH6440 of allH3605 the countryH776: and the forestH3293 devouredH398 moreH7235 peopleH5971 that dayH3117 thanH5921 the swordH2719 devouredH398. 9And AbsalomH53 chanced to meetH7122 the servantsH5650 of DavidH1732. And AbsalomH53 rodeH7392 uponH5921 his muleH6505, and the muleH6505 wentH935 underH8478 the thickH7730 boughs of a greatH1419 oakH424, and his headH7218 caughtH2388 holdH2388 of the oakH424, and he was takenH2388 upH5921 betweenH996 the heavenH8064 and the earthH776; and the muleH6505 that was underH8478 him wentH935 on. 10And a certainH259 manH376 sawH7200 it, and toldH5046 JoabH3097, and saidH559, BeholdH2009, I sawH7200 AbsalomH53 hangingH8518 in an oakH424. 11And JoabH3097 saidH559 unto the manH376 that toldH5046 him, And beholdH2009, thou sawest it, and whyH4069 didst thou notH3808 smiteH5221 him there to the groundH776? and I would have givenH5414 thee tenH6235 pieces of silverH3701, and a girdle. 12And the manH376 saidH559 unto JoabH3097, ThoughH3588 I should receiveH8254 a thousandH505 pieces of silverH3701 in mine handH3027, yet would I notH3808 putH7971 forthH7971 mine handH3027 againstH5921 the king’sH4428 sonH1121: for in our hearingH241 the kingH4428 chargedH6680 thee and AbishaiH52 and IttaiH863, sayingH559, BewareH8104 that noneH3808 touch the youngH5288 manH376 AbsalomH53. 13OtherwiseH3808 ifH176 I had dealt falselyH8267 againstH4480 his lifeH5315, (and there is noH3808 matterH1697 hidH3582 from the kingH4428,) then thou thyself wouldest have stoodH3320 aloof. 14Then saidH559 JoabH3097, I may notH3808 tarry thusH3651 with thee. And he tookH3947 threeH7969 darts in his handH3709, and thrustH8628 them throughH3820 the heartH3820 of AbsalomH53, whileH5750 he was yet aliveH2416 in the midstH3820 of the oakH424. 15And tenH6235 youngH5288 menH5288 that bare Joab’sH3097 armour compassed aboutH5437 and smoteH5221 AbsalomH53, and slewH5221 him. 16And JoabH3097 blewH8628 the trumpetH7782, and the peopleH5971 returnedH7725 from pursuingH7291 afterH310 IsraelH3478: for JoabH3097 held backH7725 the peopleH5971. 17And they tookH3947 AbsalomH53, and castH7993 him intoH413 the greatH1419 pitH6354 in the forestH3293, and raised over him a veryH3966 greatH1419 heapH1530 of stonesH68: and allH3605 IsraelH3478 fledH5127 everyH3605 one to his tentH168. 18NowH3117 AbsalomH53 in his lifeH3117 time had takenH3947 and reared upH5704 for himselfH3027 the pillarH5324, whichH834 is in the king’sH4428 dale: for he saidH559, I have noH369 sonH1121 to keepH2142 my nameH8034 in remembranceH2142: and he calledH7121 the pillarH5324 afterH5921 his own nameH8034: and it is calledH7121 Absalom’sH53 monumentH3027, unto this dayH3117. 19Then saidH559 AhimaazH290 the sonH1121 of ZadokH6659, LetH4994 meH4994 nowH4994 runH7323, and bearH1319 the kingH4428 tidingsH1319, howH3588 that the LORDH3068 hath avenged him of his enemiesH341. 20And JoabH3097 saidH559 unto him, Thou shalt notH3808 be the bearerH1319 of tidingsH1319 this dayH3117, but thou shalt bearH1319 tidingsH1319 anotherH312 dayH3117: but this dayH3117 thou shalt bearH1319 noH3808 tidingsH1319, becauseH3588 the king’sH4428 sonH1121 is deadH4191. 21Then saidH559 JoabH3097 to the CushiteH3569, Go tellH5046 the kingH4428 whatH834 thou hast seenH7200. And the CushiteH3569 bowedH7812 himselfH7812 unto JoabH3097, and ranH7323. 22Then saidH559 AhimaazH290 the sonH1121 of ZadokH6659 yet againH5750 to JoabH3097, But comeH1961 whatH4100 may, letH4994 meH413, I prayH4994 thee, also runH7323 afterH310 the CushiteH3569. And JoabH3097 saidH559, Wherefore wilt thou runH7323, my sonH1121, seeing that thou wilt have noH369 rewardH1309 for the tidings? 23But comeH1961 whatH4100 may, saidH559 he, I will runH7323. And he saidH559 unto him, RunH7323. Then AhimaazH290 ranH7323 by the wayH1870 of the PlainH3603, and overran the CushiteH3569. 24NowH2009 DavidH1732 satH3427 betweenH996 the twoH8147 gatesH8179: and the watchmanH6822 wentH413 upH5375 to the roofH1406 of the gateH8179 unto the wallH2346, and liftedH5375 upH5375 his eyesH5869, and lookedH7200, and, beholdH2009, a manH376 runningH7323 aloneH905. 25And the watchmanH6822 criedH7121, and toldH5046 the kingH4428. And the kingH4428 saidH559, IfH518 he be aloneH905, there is tidings in his mouthH6310. And he cameH1980 apace, and drewH1980 nearH7131. 26And the watchmanH6822 sawH7200 anotherH312 manH376 runningH7323: and the watchmanH6822 calledH7121 unto the porter, and saidH559, BeholdH2009, anotherH312 manH376 runningH7323 aloneH905. And the kingH4428 saidH559, He also bringeth tidingsH1319. 27And the watchmanH6822 saidH559, MeH413 thinketh the runningH4794 of the foremostH7223 is like the runningH4794 of AhimaazH290 the sonH1121 of ZadokH6659. And the kingH4428 saidH559, He is a goodH2896 manH376, and cometh with goodH2896 tidings. 28And AhimaazH290 calledH7121, and saidH559 unto the kingH4428, AllH376 is wellH7965. And he bowedH7812 himselfH7812 beforeH413 the kingH4428 with his faceH639 to the earthH776, and saidH559, BlessedH1288 be the LORDH3068 thy GodH430, whichH834 hath deliveredH5462 upH5375 the menH376 that liftedH5375 upH5375 their handH3027 againstH413 my lordH3068 the kingH4428. 29And the kingH4428 saidH559, Is it wellH7965 with the youngH5288 manH5288 AbsalomH53? And AhimaazH290 answeredH559, When JoabH3097 sentH7971 the king’sH4428 servantH5650, evenH3808 meH7971 thy servantH5650, I sawH7200 a greatH1419 tumultH1995, but I knewH3045 notH3808 whatH4100 it was. 30And the kingH4428 saidH559, TurnH5437 asideH5437, and standH5975 hereH3541. And he turnedH5437 asideH5437, and stoodH5975 stillH5975. 31And, beholdH2009, the CushiteH3569 cameH935; and the CushiteH3569 saidH559, TidingsH1319 for my lordH3068 the kingH4428: for the LORDH3068 hath avenged thee this dayH3117 of allH3605 them that roseH6965 upH6965 againstH5921 thee. 32And the kingH4428 saidH559 unto the CushiteH3569, Is it wellH7965 with the youngH5288 manH5288 AbsalomH53? And the CushiteH3569 answeredH559, The enemiesH341 of my lordH113 the kingH4428, and allH3605 that riseH6965 upH6965 againstH5921 thee to doH3605 thee hurt, be as that youngH5288 manH5288 is. 33And the king was much moved, and went up to the chamber over the gate, and wept: and as he went, thus he said, O my son Absalom, my son, my son Absalom! would God I had died for thee, O Absalom, my son, my son!
