2 Samuel 20
Revised Version 1895
1And there happenedH7122 to be there a manH376 of Belial, whoseH1121 nameH8034 was ShebaH7652, the sonH1121 of BichriH1075, a Benjamite: and he blewH8628 the trumpetH7782, and saidH559, WeH8033 have noH3808 portionH2506 in DavidH1732, neitherH3808 have weH8033 inheritanceH5159 in the sonH1121 of JesseH3448: everyH376 manH376 to his tentsH168, O IsraelH3478. 2SoH4480 allH3605 the menH376 of IsraelH3478 wentH5927 upH5927 from followingH310 DavidH1732, and followedH310 ShebaH7652 the sonH1121 of BichriH1075: but the menH376 of JudahH3063 clave unto their kingH4428, from JordanH3383 evenH5704 to JerusalemH3389. 3And DavidH1732 cameH935 to his houseH1004 at JerusalemH3389; and the kingH4428 tookH3947 the tenH6235 womenH802 his concubinesH6370, whomH834 he had leftH5414 to keepH8104 the houseH1004, and putH5414 them in ward, and providedH3557 them with sustenanceH3557, but wentH935 notH3808 in unto them. SoH3947 they were shut upH5704 unto the dayH3117 of their deathH4194, livingH2424 in widowhoodH491. 4Then saidH559 the kingH4428 to AmasaH6021, CallH559 meH413 the menH376 of JudahH3063 togetherH2199 withinH413 threeH7969 daysH3117, and be thou hereH6311 presentH5975. 5SoH4480 AmasaH6021 went to callH2199 the men of JudahH3063 togetherH2199: but he tarried longer thanH4480 the setH834 time whichH834 he had appointedH4150 him. 6And DavidH1732 saidH559 to AbishaiH52, NowH6258 shall ShebaH7652 the sonH1121 of BichriH1075 do usH413 moreH4480 harm thanH4480 did AbsalomH53: takeH3947 thou thy lord’sH113 servantsH5650, and pursueH7291 afterH310 him, lestH6435 he getH3947 him fenced citiesH5892, and escapeH5337 outH4480 of our sightH5869. 7And there wentH3318 outH3318 afterH310 him Joab’sH3097 menH376, and the CherethitesH3774 and the PelethitesH6432, and allH3605 the mightyH1368 menH376: and they wentH3318 outH3318 of JerusalemH3389, to pursueH7291 afterH310 ShebaH7652 the sonH1121 of BichriH1075. 8When they were at the greatH1419 stoneH68 whichH834 is in GibeonH1391, AmasaH6021 cameH935 to meetH6440 them. And JoabH3097 was girdedH2296 with his apparelH3830 of warH2719 that he had putH935 on, and thereonH5921 was a girdle with a swordH2719 fastenedH6775 uponH5921 his loinsH4975 in the sheathH8593 thereof; and as he wentH3318 forthH3318 it fellH5307 outH3318. 9And JoabH3097 saidH559 to AmasaH6021, Is it wellH7965 with thee, my brotherH251? And JoabH3097 tookH270 AmasaH6021 by the beardH2206 with his rightH3225 handH3027 to kiss him. 10But AmasaH6021 tookH4191 noH3808 heedH8104 to the swordH2719 that was in Joab’sH3097 handH3027: soH3808 he smoteH5221 him therewith in the bellyH2570, and shedH8210 outH8210 his bowelsH4578 to the groundH776, and struckH5221 him notH3808 againH310; and he diedH4191. And JoabH3097 and AbishaiH52 his brotherH251 pursuedH7291 afterH310 ShebaH7652 the sonH1121 of BichriH1075. 11And there stood by him one of Joab’sH3097 youngH5288 menH376, and saidH559, He that favoureth JoabH3097, and he that is for DavidH1732, let him followH310 JoabH3097. 12And AmasaH6021 layH1556 wallowingH1556 in his bloodH1818 in the midstH8432 of the highwayH4546. And when the manH376 sawH7200 that allH3605 the peopleH5971 stoodH5975 stillH5975, he carriedH935 AmasaH6021 outH4480 of the highwayH4546 intoH935 the fieldH7704, and castH7993 a garmentH899 over him, when he sawH7200 that everyH3605 one that cameH935 by him stoodH5975 stillH5975. 13When he was removedH4480 outH4480 of the highwayH4546, allH3605 the peopleH376 wentH376 on afterH310 JoabH3097, to pursueH7291 afterH310 ShebaH7652 the sonH1121 of BichriH1075. 14And he wentH935 throughH5674 allH3605 the tribesH7626 of IsraelH3478 unto AbelH59, and to Beth-maacahH1038, and allH3605 the BeritesH1276: and they were gathered together, and wentH935 also afterH310 him. 15And they cameH935 and besieged him in AbelH59 of Beth-maacahH1038, and they castH5307 upH5975 a mount againstH5921 the cityH5892, and it stoodH5975 againstH5921 the rampartH2426: and allH3605 the peopleH5971 that were with JoabH3097 battered the wallH2346, to throwH8210 it downH5307. 16Then criedH7121 a wiseH2450 womanH802 outH4480 of the cityH5892, HearH8085, hearH8085; sayH559, I prayH4994 youH5704, unto JoabH3097, ComeH7126 nearH7126 hither, that I may speakH1696 with thee. 17And he cameH7126 nearH7126 unto herH413, and the womanH802 saidH559, Art thou JoabH3097? And he answeredH559, I am. Then she saidH559 unto him, HearH8085 the wordsH1697 of thine handmaidH519. And he answeredH559, I doH589 hearH8085. 18Then sheH3651 spake, sayingH559, they were wont to speakH1696 in oldH7223 time, sayingH559, They shall surelyH3651 askH7592 counsel at AbelH59: and soH3651 they endedH8552 the matter. 19I am of them that are peaceable and faithfulH539 in IsraelH3478: thou seekest to destroyH4191 a cityH5892 and a motherH517 in IsraelH3478: whyH4100 wilt thou swallowH1104 upH1104 the inheritanceH5159 of the LORDH3068? 20And JoabH3097 answeredH559 and saidH559, FarH2486 be it, farH2486 be it from meH2486, that I should swallowH1104 upH1104 or destroyH7843. 21The matterH1697 is notH3808 soH3651: but a manH376 of the hillH2022 countryH2022 of EphraimH669, ShebaH7652 the sonH1121 of BichriH1075 by nameH8034, hath liftedH5375 upH5375 his handH3027 againstH5921 the kingH4428, evenH3588 againstH5921 DavidH1732: deliverH5414 him onlyH905, and I will depart from the cityH5892. And the womanH802 saidH559 unto JoabH3097, BeholdH2009, his headH7218 shall be thrownH7993 to thee over the wallH2346. 22Then the womanH802 wentH935 unto allH3605 the peopleH5971 in herH3605 wisdomH2451. And they cutH3772 offH3772 the headH7218 of ShebaH7652 the sonH1121 of BichriH1075, and threwH7993 it outH5921 to JoabH3097. And he blewH8628 the trumpetH7782, and they were dispersedH6327 from the cityH5892, everyH3605 manH376 to his tentH168. And JoabH3097 returnedH7725 to JerusalemH3389 unto the kingH4428. 23Now JoabH3097 was over allH3605 the hostH6635 of IsraelH3478: and BenaiahH1141 the sonH1121 of JehoiadaH3077 was over the Cherethites and over the PelethitesH6432: 24and AdoramH151 was over the tributeH4522: and JehoshaphatH3092 the sonH1121 of AhiludH286 was the recorderH2142: 25and Sheva was scribeH5608: and ZadokH6659 and AbiatharH54 were priestsH3548: 26and IraH5896 also the JairiteH2972 was priestH3548 unto DavidH1732.
