2 Samuel 19
Revised Version 1895
1And it was toldH559 JoabH559, Behold, the kingH4428 weepeth and mourneth for AbsalomH53. 2And the victory that day was turned intoH5921 mourningH56 unto allH2009 the people: for the people heardH5046 say that day, The kingH4428 grieveth for his son. 3And the peopleH5971 gat them by stealth that dayH3117 intoH5921 the cityH1931, as peopleH5971 that are ashamed steal awayH3605 when they flee in battleH3117. 4And the king covered his face, and the king cried with a loud voice, O my son Absalom, O Absalom, my son, my son! 5And Joab came into the house to the kingH4428, and said, Thou hast shamed this day the facesH6440 of allH1419 thy servants, which this day have saved thy life, and the lives of thy sonsH1121 and of thy daughters, and the lives of thy wives, and the lives of thy concubines; 6in that thou lovest them that hate thee, and hatest them that love thee. For thou hast declaredH559 this dayH3117, that princes and servantsH5650 are nought unto thee: for this dayH3117 I perceive, that ifH1121 Absalom had livedH5315, and allH3605 weH3117 had died this dayH3117, then it had pleased thee well. 7NowH3117 therefore arise, go forthH3045 and speak comfortably unto thy servantsH5650: for I swearH3588 by the LORD, ifH3588 thou go notH369 forthH3045, there will notH369 tarry a manH4191 with thee this night: and that will be worse unto thee thanH3605 allH3605 the evil that hath befallen thee from thy youth until nowH3117. 8Then the kingH5921 aroseH6965, and sat in the gate. And they toldH1696 unto allH3605 the peopleH376, sayingH1696, Behold, the kingH5921 doth sitH935 in the gate: and allH3605 the peopleH376 cameH935 beforeH5704 the kingH5921. NowH6258 Israel had fled everyH3605 manH376 to his tent. 9And allH3605 the peopleH5971 were at strife throughoutH3605 allH3605 the tribes of IsraelH3478, sayingH559, The kingH4428 delivered usH5046 outH6440 of the hand of our enemiesH6965, and he saved usH5046 outH6440 of the hand of the Philistines; and nowH2009 he is fledH5127 outH6440 of the landH6440 from Absalom. 10And AbsalomH53, whom weH6258 anointed over usH5921, is dead in battle. NowH6258 therefore why speakH559 ye notH1961 a wordH559 of bringing the kingH4428 back? 11And kingH4428 David sentH7725 to Zadok and to Abiathar the priests, saying, Speak unto the elders of Judah, saying, WhyH4100 are ye the last to bringH7725 the kingH4428 backH7725 to his house? seeing the speech of all IsraelH4421 is comeH7725 to the kingH4428, to bringH7725 him to his house. 12Ye are my brethren, ye are my bone and my flesh: wherefore then are ye the lastH314 to bringH935 backH7725 the kingH4428? 13And say ye to Amasa, Art thou notH1961 my boneH6106 and my fleshH1320? God doH4100 soH1961 to meH7725, and more also, ifH1961 thou be notH1961 captain of the host before meH7725 continually in the room of Joab. 14And he bowed the heart of allH3605 the menH3605 of Judah, evenH3808 as the heart of one manH3605; soH6213 that they sentH559 unto the king, sayingH559, ReturnH8478 thou, and allH3605 thy servants. 15SoH7971 the kingH4428 returnedH7725, and cameH413 to Jordan. And JudahH3063 cameH413 to Gilgal, to goH7971 to meet the kingH4428, to bringH7725 the kingH4428 over Jordan. 16And Shimei the son of Gera, the Benjamite, which was of Bahurim, hasted and cameH935 down with the men of JudahH3063 to meetH7125 kingH4428 David. 17And there were a thousand menH376 of Benjamin with him, and Ziba the servant of the house of Saul, and his fifteen sonsH1121 and his twenty servantsH376 with him; and they wentH3381 through Jordan in the presenceH5973 of the kingH4428. 18And there wentH376 over a ferry boat to bring over the king’sH4428 householdH1004, and to do what he thought good. And Shimei the sonH1121 of Gera fell downH6440 beforeH6440 the kingH4428, when he was come over JordanH3383. 19And he said unto the kingH4428, Let notH1121 my lord impute iniquity unto meH6440, neither doH6213 thou remember that whichH5869 thy servant didH6213 perversely the day that my lord the kingH4428 wentH6440 outH6440 of Jerusalem, that the kingH4428 should take it to his heart. 20For thy servantH5650 doth know that I have sinned: therefore, behold, I am comeH3318 this dayH3117 the firstH3117 of allH3117 the house of JosephH413 to goH3318 downH7760 to meetH3318 my lordH113 the kingH4428. 21But Abishai the son of Zeruiah answeredH935 and said, Shall notH3588 Shimei be putH935 to death for this, becauseH3588 he cursed the LORD’SH113 anointed? 22And David saidH559, WhatH2063 have I to do with youH3588, ye sonsH1121 of ZeruiahH6870, that ye should this day be adversaries unto meH4191? shall there anyH3588 manH1121 be putH4191 to deathH4191 this day in Israel? for do notH3808 I know that I am this day king over Israel? 23And the kingH4428 saidH559 unto Shimei, Thou shalt notH3808 dieH4191. And the kingH4428 sware unto him. 24And MephiboshethH3808 the son of SaulH559 cameH413 down to meet the kingH4428; and he had neitherH3808 dressed his feet, norH3808 trimmed his beard, norH3808 washed his clothes, from the day the kingH4428 departed until the day he cameH413 home in peace. 25And it cameH935 to passH935, when he was comeH935 to Jerusalem to meetH7125 the kingH4428, that the kingH4428 said unto him, Wherefore wentest notH3808 thou with meH4480, MephiboshethH4648? 26And he answeredH559, My lord, O kingH4428, my servant deceived meH935: for thy servant saidH559, I will saddle meH935 an ass, that I may ride thereon, and goH1980 with the kingH4428; becauseH3588 thy servant is lame. 27And he hath slandered thy servantH5650 unto my lordH113 the kingH4428; but my lordH113 the kingH4428 is as an angel of GodH559: do therefore whatH5921 is good in thine eyes. 28For all my father’s house were but dead menH5650 beforeH5869 my lordH113 the kingH4428: yet didst thou setH6213 thy servantH5650 among them that didH6213 eat at thine ownH5869 table. WhatH2896 rightH5869 therefore have I yet that I should cry any more unto the kingH4428? 29And the kingH4428 saidH413 unto him, WhyH4100 speakest thou anyH3605 moreH5750 of thy matters? I say, Thou and Ziba divide the land. 30And Mephibosheth saidH559 unto the kingH4428, Yea, let him take allH1697, forasmuch as my lord the kingH4428 is come in peace unto his own house: 31And Barzillai the Gileadite cameH935 down from Rogelim; and he wentH935 over Jordan with the kingH4428, to conduct him over Jordan. 32Now BarzillaiH1271 was a very aged man, evenH853 fourscore years old: and he had provided the kingH4428 with sustenance whileH3383 he layH7971 at Mahanaim; for he was a very great man. 33And the kingH4428 said unto BarzillaiH1271, Come thou over with meH1121, and I will sustainH3557 thee with meH1121 in Jerusalem. 34And BarzillaiH1271 saidH559 unto the kingH4428, How many are the days of the years of my life, that I should goH5674 upH853 with the kingH4428 unto JerusalemH3389? 35I am this dayH3117 fourscore yearsH3117 old: canH4100 I discern between good and bad? canH4100 thy servant taste whatH4100 I eat or whatH4100 I drink? canH4100 I hear anyH5927 moreH3588 the voice of singing menH8147 and singing women? wherefore then should thy servant be yet a burdenH413 unto my lord the kingH4428? 36Thy servantH5650 would but justH834 goH1961 over Jordan with the kingH4428: and whyH4100 should the kingH4428 recompense it meH413 with suchH834 a reward? 37Let thy servantH5650, I pray thee, turnH5674 back again, that I may die in mine own city, by the grave of my father and my mother. But behold, thy servantH5650 Chimham; let him goH5674 over with my lord the kingH4428; and doH4100 to him whatH4100 shall seem good unto thee. 38And the kingH4428 answeredH7725, ChimhamH3643 shall goH7725 over with meH4994, and I will doH6213 to him that whichH834 shall seemH5869 goodH2896 unto thee: and whatsoever thou shalt require of meH4994, that will I doH6213 for thee. 39And allH3605 the peopleH834 went over Jordan, and the kingH4428 went over: and the kingH4428 kissed Barzillai, and blessed him; and he returned unto his ownH5869 placeH3605. 40SoH7725 the kingH4428 wentH7725 over to Gilgal, and Chimham wentH7725 over with him: and allH3605 the peopleH5971 of Judah broughtH7725 the kingH4428 over, and also half the peopleH5971 of IsraelH5971. 41And, behold, allH3605 the menH5971 of IsraelH3478 came to the kingH4428; and said unto the kingH4428, Why have our brethren the menH5971 of JudahH3063 stolen thee awayH5973, and brought the kingH4428, and his household, over Jordan, and allH3605 David’s menH5971 with him? 42And allH3605 the menH376 of JudahH3063 answeredH559 the menH376 of IsraelH3478, BecauseH413 the kingH4428 is nearH5973 of kin to usH413: wherefore then be ye angry for this matter? have weH3605 eaten at allH3605 of the king’sH4428 cost? or hath he given usH413 anyH3605 gift? 43And the menH376 of IsraelH3478 answeredH6030 the menH376 of JudahH3063, and saidH413, WeH3588 have ten partsH1697 in the kingH4428; and weH3588 have also moreH4480 right in David thanH4480 ye: whyH4100 then didH4100 ye despise usH413, that our adviceH1697 should notH2088 be firstH2088 had in bringingH5375 backH413 our kingH4428? And the wordsH1697 of the menH376 of JudahH3063 were fiercer thanH4480 the wordsH1697 of the menH376 of IsraelH3478.
