Context of Numbers 34:12

10‘For your eastern border you shall also draw a boundary from Hazar-enan to Shepham, 11and the border shall go down from Shepham to Riblah on the east side of Ain; and the border shall go down and reach to the slope on the east side of the Sea of Chinnereth. And the border shall go down to the Jordan, and its termination shall be at the Salt Sea. This shall be your land according to its borders on all sides.’” 13So Moses commanded the sons of Israel, saying, “This is the land that you are to possess by lot, which the Lord has commanded to give to the nine and a half tribes. 14For the tribe of the sons of Reuben have received theirs according to their fathers’ households, and the tribe of the sons of Gad according to their fathers’ households, and the half-tribe of Manasseh have received their possession.

Commentaries on Numbers 34:12

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 12The border shall go down to Jordan - This river is famous both in the Old and New Testaments. It takes its rise at the foot of Mount Libanus, passes through the sea of Chinnereth or Tiberias, and empties itself into the lake Asphaltites or Dead Sea, from which it has no outlet. In and by it God wrought many miracles. God cut off the waters of this river as he did those of the Red Sea, so that they stood on a heap on each side, and the people passed over…Read the comment
• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 10-12Verses 10-12 Shepham, the first point after Hazar-enan, is unknown. The name Riblah is by some read Har-bel, i. e., “the Mountain of Bel;” the Har-baal-Hermon of Judges 3:3. No more striking landmark could be set forth than the summit of Hermon, the southernmost and by far the loftiest peak of the whole Antilibanus range, rising to a height of 10,000 feet, and overtopping every other mountain in the Holy land. Ain, i. e. the fountain, is understood to be…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 12The natural eastern border of Canaan followed the Jordan River down to the Salt Sea (or Dead Sea). The Jordan River and the Salt Sea were part of the Great Rift Valley. They were strong barriers, but people could cross them. This boundary did not include the lands east of the Jordan River. Reuben, Gad, and half of the tribe of Manasseh lived there. These settlements were not part of Canaan. There were outside the first borders of the promised land.Read the comment
• Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 10-1210-12. east border--This is very clearly defined. Shepham and Riblah, which were in the valley of Lebanon, are mentioned as the boundary line, which commenced a little higher than the sources of the Jordan. Ain is supposed to be the source of that river; and thence the eastern boundary extended along the Jordan, the sea of Chinnereth (Lake of Tiberias), the Jordan; and again terminated at the Dead Sea. The line being drawn on the east of the river and the…Read the comment
