John 1:23-37

23He said, “I am 1the voice of one calling 2out in the wilderness, ‘Make the way of the Lord straight,’ as Isaiah the prophet said.”

24And the messengers had been sent from the Pharisees. 25They asked him, and said to him, “Why then are you baptizing, if you are not the 3Christ, nor Elijah, nor 4the Prophet?” 26John answered them, saying, “5I baptize 6in water, but among you stands One whom you do not know. 27It is 7He who comes after me, of whom I am not worthy even to untie the 8strap of His sandal.” 28These things took place in Bethany 9beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing people.

29The next day he saw Jesus coming to him, and said, “Behold, 10the Lamb of God who 11takes away the sin of the world! 30This is He in behalf of whom I said, ‘12After me is coming a Man who has proved to be 13my superior, 14because He existed before me.’ 31And I did not recognize 15Him, but so that He would be revealed to Israel, I came baptizing 16in water.” 32And John 17testified, saying, “18I have seen the Spirit descending as a dove out of heaven, and He remained upon Him. 33And I did not recognize 19Him, but He who sent me to baptize 20in water said to me, ‘He upon whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining upon Him, 21this is the One who baptizes 22in the Holy Spirit.’ 34And I myself have seen, and have testified that this is 23the 24Son of God.”

35Again 25the next day John was standing 26with two of his disciples, 36and he looked at Jesus as He walked, and said, “Behold, 27the Lamb of God!” 37And the two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus.
