Context of Amos 2:2
1This is what the Lord says: “For three offenses of Moab, and for four, I will not revoke its punishment, Because he burned the bones of the king of Edom to lime. So I will send fire upon Moab And it will consume the citadels of Kerioth; And Moab will die amid the panic of battle, Amid war cries and the sound of a trumpet. 3I will also eliminate the judge from her midst And slay all her leaders with him,” says the Lord. 4This is what the Lord says: “For three offenses of Judah, and for four, I will not revoke its punishment, Because they rejected the Law of the Lord And have not kept His statutes; Their lies also have led them astray, Those which their fathers followed.

In the plain or high downs of Moab itself, there were both Kiriathaim, “double city” and Kerloth Jeremiah 48:23-24; in Naphthali, a Kiriathaim, (1 Chronicles 6:76, (1 Chronicles 6:61 in Hebrew)) or…Read the comment

The Moabites may have burned the remains of Edom's king or offered him as a human sacrifice at this site. Because of this act, God would destroy the king of Moab and his officers. This likely happened through an invasion by Sargon II of Assyria around 715 to 713 BC (compare Isaiah 15–16). Josephus, in Antiquities 10.9.7, suggests further…Read the comment
