Context of 2 Samuel 23:9
7Instead, the man who touches them Must be armed with iron and the shaft of a spear, And they will be completely burned with fire in their place.” 8These are the names of the mighty men whom David had: Josheb-basshebeth, a Tahchemonite, chief of the captains; he was called Adino the Eznite because of eight hundred who were killed by him at one time. And after him was Eleazar the son of Dodo the Ahohite, one of the three mighty men with David when they defied the Philistines who were gathered there to battle and the men of Israel had withdrawn. 10He rose up and struck the Philistines until his hand was weary and it clung to the sword, and the Lord brought about a great victory that day; and the people returned after him only to plunder the dead. 11Now after him was Shammah the son of Agee, a Hararite. And the Philistines were gathered into an army where there was a plot of land full of lentils, and the people fled from the Philistines.

Commentaries on 2 Samuel 23:9
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 9When they defied the Philistines that were there gathered - This is supposed to refer to the war in which David slew Goliath.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 9Gone away - Rather, went up to battle (2 Samuel 5:19; 2 Kings 3:21, etc.) against them. These words and what follows as far as “troop” 2 Samuel 23:11 have fallen out of the text in Chronicles. The effect of this is to omit EIeazar‘s feat, as here described, to attribute to him Shammah‘s victory, to misplace the flight of the Israelites, and to omit Shammah altogether from the list of David‘s mighty men.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 8-39Verses 8-39 David once earnestly longed for the water at the well of Bethlehem. It seems to be an instance of weakness. He was thirsty; with the water of that well he had often refreshed himself when a youth, and it was without due thought that he desired it. Were his valiant men so forward to expose themselves, upon the least hint of their prince's mind, and so eager to please him, and shall not we long to approve ourselves to our Lord Jesus, by ready…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 8-39This section lists David's top warriors by name, highlighting their notable achievements. These warriors were like "iron tools" that God used to defeat the godless (2 Samuel 23:7). The list is divided into the Three and the Thirty. Some Hebrew scholars suggest that the Thirty could mean "Officers." If true, the Three might have originally referred to a specific military role.Read the comment
