Song of Songs 5

New American Standard Bible 1995

The Torment of Separation

1“1I have 2come into my garden, 3my sister, my bride; I have gathered my 4myrrh along with my balsam. I have eaten my honeycomb 5and my 6honey; I have 7drunk my wine 8and my milk. Eat, 9friends; Drink and 10imbibe deeply, O lovers.”

2“11I was asleep but my heart was awake. A voice! My beloved was knocking: ‘Open to me, 12my sister, my darling, 13My dove, my perfect one! For my head is 14drenched with dew, My 15locks with the 16damp of the night.’3I have 17taken off my dress, How can I put it on again? I have 18washed my feet, How can I dirty them again?4My beloved extended his hand through the opening, And my 1920feelings were aroused for him.5I arose to open to my beloved; And my hands 21dripped with myrrh, And my fingers with 22liquid myrrh, On the handles of the bolt.6I opened to my beloved, But my beloved had 23turned away and had gone! My 24heart went out to him as he 25spoke. I 26searched for him but I did not find him; I 27called him but he did not answer me.7The 28watchmen who make the rounds in the city found me, They struck me and wounded me; The guardsmen of the walls took away my shawl from me.8I 29adjure you, O daughters of Jerusalem, If you find my beloved, As to what you will tell him: For 30I am lovesick.”

9“3132What kind of beloved is your beloved, O 33most beautiful among women? 34What kind of beloved is your beloved, That thus you adjure us?”

Admiration by the Bride

10“35My beloved is dazzling and 36ruddy, 3738Outstanding among ten thousand.11His head is like gold, pure gold; His 39locks are like clusters of dates And black as a raven.12His 40eyes are like doves Beside streams of water, Bathed in milk, And 41reposed in their 42setting.13His cheeks are like a 43bed of balsam, Banks of sweet-scented herbs; His lips are 44lilies 45Dripping with liquid myrrh.14His hands are rods of gold Set with 46beryl; His abdomen is carved ivory Inlaid with 4748sapphires.15His legs are pillars of alabaster Set on pedestals of pure gold; His appearance is like 49Lebanon Choice as the 50cedars.16His 5152mouth is full of sweetness. And he is wholly 53desirable. This is my beloved and this is my friend, O daughters of Jerusalem.”
