Deliverance from the Philistines

1And the menH376of Kiriath-jearimH7157cameוַיָּבֹ֜אוּvai.ya.Vo.'uH935and tookוַֽיַּעֲלוּ֙vai.ya.'a.LuH5927the arkאֲר֣וֹן'a.RonH727of the Lordיְהוָ֔הYah.wehH3068andbroughtוַיָּבִ֣אוּvai.ya.Vi.'uH935it into the houseבֵּ֥יתbeitH1004of Abinadabאֲבִינָדָ֖ב'a.vi.na.DavH41on the hillבַּגִּבְעָ֑הba.giv.'AhH1389,and consecratedקִדְּשׁ֔וּki.de.ShuH6942Eleazarאֶלְעָזָ֤ר'el.'a.ZarH499his sonבְּנוֹ֙be.NoH1121to keepלִשְׁמֹ֖רlish.MorH8104the arkאֲר֥וֹן'a.RonH727of the Lordיְהוָֽה׃ פYah.wehH3068.

2From the dayמִיּ֞וֹםmi.YomH3117that the arkהָֽאָרוֹן֙ha.'a.rOnH727remainedשֶׁ֤בֶתShe.vetH3427at Kiriath-jearimH7157,the timeהַיָּמִ֔יםhai.ya.MimH3117was longוַיִּרְבּוּ֙vai.yir.BuH7235,for it was twentyעֶשְׂרִ֣ים'es.RimH6242yearsשָׁנָ֑הsha.NahH8141;and allכָּל־kol-H3605the houseבֵּ֥יתbeitH1004of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֖לYis.ra.'ElH3478lamentedוַיִּנָּה֛וּvai.yi.na.HuH5091afterאַחֲרֵ֥י'a.cha.ReiH310the Lordיְהוָֽה׃ סYah.wehH3068.

3Then Samuelשְׁמוּאֵ֗לshe.mu.'ElH8050spokeוַיֹּ֣אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to allכָּל־kol-H3605the houseבֵּ֣יתbeitH1004of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵל֮Yis.ra.'ElH3478,sayingלֵאמֹר֒le.MorH559, “Ifאִם־'im-H518you returnשָׁבִים֙sha.VimH7725to the Lordיְהוָ֔הYah.wehH3068with allבְּכָל־be.kholH3605your heartלְבַבְכֶ֗םle.vav.KhemH3824,removeהָסִ֜ירוּha.Si.ruH5493the foreignהַנֵּכָ֛רha.ne.KharH5236godsאֱלֹהֵ֧י'e.lo.HeiH430and theAshtarothוְהָעַשְׁתָּר֑וֹתve.ha.'ash.ta.RotH6252from amongמִתּוֹכְכֶ֖םmi.tokh.KhemH8432you anddirectוְהָכִ֨ינוּve.ha.Khi.nuH3559your heartsלְבַבְכֶ֤םle.vav.KhemH3824to the Lordיְהוָה֙Yah.wehH3068andserveוְעִבְדֻ֣הוּve.'iv.Du.huH5647Him aloneלְבַדּ֔וֹle.va.DoH905;and He will deliverוְיַצֵּ֥לve.ya.TzelH5337you from the handמִיַּ֥דmi.YadH3027of the Philistinesפְּלִשְׁתִּֽים׃pe.lish.TimH6430.”

4So the sonsבְּנֵ֣יbe.NeiH1121of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֔לYis.ra.'ElH3478removedוַיָּסִ֙ירוּ֙vai.ya.Si.ruH5493the Baalsהַבְּעָלִ֖יםha.be.'a.LimH1168and the Ashtarothהָעַשְׁתָּרֹ֑תha.'ash.ta.RotH6252and servedוַיַּעַבְד֥וּvai.ya.'av.DuH5647the Lordיְהוָ֖הYah.wehH3068aloneלְבַדּֽוֹ׃ פle.va.DoH905.

5Then Samuelשְׁמוּאֵ֔לshe.mu.'ElH8050saidוַיֹּ֣אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “Gatherקִבְצ֥וּkiv.TzuH6908allכָּל־kol-H3605Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֖לYis.ra.'ElH3478toMizpahH4708andI will prayוְאֶתְפַּלֵּ֥לve.'et.pa.LelH6419to the Lordיְהוָֽה׃Yah.wehH3068for you.”

6They gatheredוַיִּקָּבְצ֣וּvai.yi.ka.ve.TzuH6908to Mizpahהַ֠מִּצְפָּתָהHa.mitz.pa.tahH4709,and drewוַיִּֽשְׁאֲבוּ־vai.yish.'a.vu-H7579waterמַ֜יִםMa.yimH4325andpouredוַֽיִּשְׁפְּכ֣וּ׀vai.yish.pe.KhuH8210it out beforeלִפְנֵ֣יlif.NeiH6440the Lordיְהוָ֗הYah.wehH3068, andfastedוַיָּצ֙וּמוּ֙vai.ya.Tzu.muH6684on that dayבַּיּ֣וֹםbai.YomH3117and saidוַיֹּ֣אמְרוּvai.Yo.me.ruH559thereשָׁ֔םShamH8033, “We have sinnedחָטָ֖אנוּcha.Ta.nuH2398against the Lordלַיהוָ֑הla.Yah.wehH3068.”And Samuelשְׁמוּאֵ֛לshe.mu.'ElH8050judgedוַיִּשְׁפֹּ֧טvai.yish.PotH8199the sonsבְּנֵ֥יbe.NeiH1121of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֖לYis.ra.'ElH3478at Mizpahבַּמִּצְפָּֽה׃ba.mitz.PahH4709.

7Now when the Philistinesפְלִשְׁתִּ֗יםfe.lish.TimH6430heardוַיִּשְׁמְע֣וּvai.yish.me.'UH8085that the sonsבְנֵֽי־ve.nei-H1121of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵל֙Yis.ra.'ElH3478had gatheredהִתְקַבְּצ֤וּhit.ka.be.TzuH6908to Mizpahהַמִּצְפָּ֔תָהha.mitz.Pa.tahH4709,the lordsסַרְנֵֽי־sar.nei-H5633of the Philistinesפְלִשְׁתִּ֖יםfe.lish.TimH6430wentוַיַּעֲל֥וּvai.ya.'a.LuH5927up againstאֶל־'el-H413Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֑לYis.ra.'ElH3478.And when the sonsבְּנֵ֣יbe.NeiH1121of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֔לYis.ra.'ElH3478heardוַֽיִּשְׁמְעוּ֙vai.yish.me.'UH8085it,they were afraidוַיִּֽרְא֖וּvai.yir.'UH3372of the Philistinesפְלִשְׁתִּֽים׃fe.lish.TimH6430.

8Then the sonsבְנֵֽי־ve.nei-H1121of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵל֙Yis.ra.'ElH3478saidוַיֹּאמְר֤וּvai.yo.me.RuH559to Samuelשְׁמוּאֵ֔לshe.mu.'ElH8050, “Do not ceaseתַּחֲרֵ֣שׁta.cha.ReshH2790to cryמִזְּעֹ֖קmi.ze.'OkH2199to the Lordיְהוָ֣הYah.wehH3068our Godאֱלֹהֵ֑ינוּ'e.lo.Hei.nuH430for us, that He may saveוְיֹשִׁעֵ֖נוּve.yo.shi.'E.nuH3467us from the handמִיַּ֥דmi.YadH3027of the Philistinesפְּלִשְׁתִּֽים׃pe.lish.TimH6430.”

9Samuelשְׁמוּאֵ֗לshe.mu.'ElH8050tookוַיִּקַּ֣חvai.yi.KachH3947a sucklingחָלָב֙cha.LavH2461lambטְלֵ֤הte.LehH2924and offeredוַיַּעֲלֵ֧הוּvai.ya.'a.le.huH5927it for a wholeכָּלִ֖ילka.LilH3632burntעוֹלָ֛הo.LahH5930offeringH5930to the Lordלַֽיהוָ֑הla.Yah.wehH3068;and Samuelשְׁמוּאֵ֤לshe.mu.'ElH8050criedוַיִּזְעַ֨קvai.yiz.'AkH2199to the Lordיְהוָה֙Yah.wehH3068for Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֔לYis.ra.'ElH3478andthe Lordיְהוָֽה׃Yah.wehH3068answeredוַֽיַּעֲנֵ֖הוּvai.ya.'a.Ne.huH6030him.

10Now Samuelשְׁמוּאֵל֙she.mu.'ElH8050was offeringמַעֲלֶ֣הma.'a.LehH5927up the burntהָעוֹלָ֔הha.'o.LahH5930offeringH5930,and the Philistinesוּפְלִשְׁתִּ֣יםu.fe.lish.TimH6430drewH5066nearH5066to battleלַמִּלְחָמָ֖הla.mil.cha.MahH4421against Israelבְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֑לbe.Yis.ra.'ElH3478. Butthe Lordיְהוָ֣ה׀Yah.wehH3068thunderedוַיַּרְעֵ֣םvai.yar.'EmH7481with a greatגָּ֠דוֹלGa.dolH1419thunderבְּקוֹל־be.kol-H6963on that dayבַּיּ֨וֹםbai.YomH3117againstעַל־'al-H5921the Philistinesפְּלִשְׁתִּים֙pe.lish.TimH6430andconfusedוַיְהֻמֵּ֔םvay.hu.MemH2000them, so that they wereroutedוַיִּנָּגְפ֖וּvai.yi.na.ge.FuH5062beforeלִפְנֵ֥יlif.NeiH6440Israelיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃Yis.ra.'ElH3478.

11The menH376of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵל֙Yis.ra.'ElH3478wentוַיֵּ֨צְא֜וּvai.Ye.tze.'UH3318out of Mizpahהַמִּצְפָּ֔הha.mitz.PahH4709and pursuedוַֽיִּרְדְּפ֖וּvai.yir.de.FuH7291the Philistinesפְּלִשְׁתִּ֑יםpe.lish.TimH6430,and struckH5221them downוַיַּכּ֕וּםvai.ya.KumH5221as farעַד־'ad-H5704as belowמִן־ מִתַּ֖חַתmin- mi.Ta.chatH4480 H8478Beth-carH1033.

12Then Samuelשְׁמוּאֵ֜לshe.mu.'ElH8050tookוַיִּקַּ֨חvai.yi.KachH3947a stoneאֶ֣בֶן'E.venH68and setוַיָּ֤שֶׂםvai.Ya.semH7760it betweenH996Mizpahהַמִּצְפָּה֙ha.mitz.PahH4709and Shenהַשֵּׁ֔ןha.ShenH8129,and namedוַיִּקְרָ֥א שְׁמָ֖הּvai.yik.Ra' she.MahH7121 H8034itEbenezerH72,sayingוַיֹּאמַ֕רvai.yo.MarH559, “Thusהֵ֖נָּהHe.nahH2008farעַד־'ad-H5704the Lordיְהוָֽה׃Yah.wehH3068has helpedעֲזָרָ֥נוּ'a.za.Ra.nuH5826us.”

13So the Philistinesהַפְּלִשְׁתִּ֔יםha.pe.lish.TimH6430were subduedוַיִּכָּֽנְעוּ֙vai.yi.ka.ne.'UH3665andthey didיָסְפ֣וּya.se.FuH3254not comeלָב֖וֹאla.Vo'H935anymoreע֔וֹדodH5750within the borderבִּגְב֣וּלbig.VulH1366of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֑לYis.ra.'ElH3478.And the handיַד־yad-H3027of the Lordיְהוָה֙Yah.wehH3068was against the Philistinesבַּפְּלִשְׁתִּ֔יםba.pe.lish.TimH6430allכֹּ֖לkolH3605the daysיְמֵ֥יye.MeiH3117of Samuelשְׁמוּאֵֽל׃she.mu.'ElH8050.

14The citiesהֶעָרִ֡יםhe.'a.RimH5892whichאֲשֶׁ֣ר'a.SherH834the Philistinesפְלִשְׁתִּים֩fe.lish.TimH6430had takenלָֽקְחוּ־la.ke.chu-H3947from Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֤ל׀Yis.ra.'ElH3478were restoredוַתָּשֹׁ֣בְנָהva.ta.Shoe.nahH7725to Israelלְיִשְׂרָאֵל֙le.Yis.ra.'ElH3478,from Ekronמֵעֶקְר֣וֹןme.'ek.RonH6138even to Gathגַּ֔תGatH1661;and Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֖לYis.ra.'ElH3478deliveredהִצִּ֥ילhi.TzilH5337their territoryגְּבוּלָ֔ןge.vu.LanH1366from the handמִיַּ֣דmi.YadH3027of the Philistinesפְּלִשְׁתִּ֑יםpe.lish.TimH6430.So there was peaceשָׁל֔וֹםsha.LomH7965betweenH996Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֖לYis.ra.'ElH3478andthe Amoritesהָאֱמֹרִֽי׃ha.'e.mo.RiH567.
