Context of Nahum 1:7
5Mountains quake because of Him And the hills dissolve; Indeed the earth is upheaved by His presence, The world and all the inhabitants in it. 6Who can stand before His indignation? Who can endure the burning of His anger? His wrath is poured out like fire And the rocks are broken up by Him. The Lord is good, A stronghold in the day of trouble, And He knows those who take refuge in Him. 8But with an overflowing flood He will make a complete end of its site, And will pursue His enemies into darkness. 9Whatever you devise against the Lord, He will make a complete end of it. Distress will not rise up twice.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 7The Lord is good - In the midst of judgment he remembers mercy; and among the most dreadful denunciations of wrath he mingles promises of mercy. None that trust in him need be alarmed at these dreadful threatenings; they shall be discriminated in the day of wrath, for the Lord knoweth them that trust in him.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 7The LORD is good: God judges the wicked fairly. He also offers refuge to those who trust in him. He accepts and protects them during life's challenges (Psalms 18:2; 62:5–7). God's abundant goodness can inspire people to repent (Romans 2:2–4).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 77. Here Nahum enters on his special subject, for which the previous verses have prepared the way, namely, to assure his people of safety in Jehovah under the impending attack of Sennacherib (Na 1:7), and to announce the doom of Nineveh, the capital of the Assyrian foe (Na 1:8). The contrast of Na 1:7, 8 heightens the force. he knoweth--recognizes as His own (Ho 13:5; Am 3:2); and so, cares for and guards (Psa 1:6; 2Ti 2:19).Read the comment
