Context of Nahum 1:7
5The mountains quake because of him. The hills melt. The earth draws back in his presence. The world and all who live in it draw back as well. 6Who can stand in the presence of his rage? Who can oppose his burning anger? He pours out his rage like fire and smashes the rocky cliffs. The Lord is good. ⌞He is⌟ a fortress in the day of trouble. He knows those who seek shelter in him. 8He will put an end to Nineveh with a devastating flood. He will pursue his enemies with darkness. 9What do you think about the Lord? He is the one who will bring Nineveh to an end. This trouble will never happen again.

- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 77. Here Nahum enters on his special subject, for which the previous verses have prepared the way, namely, to assure his people of safety in Jehovah under the impending attack of Sennacherib (Na 1:7), and to announce the doom of Nineveh, the capital of the Assyrian foe (Na 1:8). The contrast of Na 1:7, 8 heightens the force. he knoweth--recognizes as His own (Ho 13:5; Am 3:2); and so, cares for and guards (Psa 1:6; 2Ti 2:19).Read the comment
