Context of Luke 7:5
3When he heard about Jesus, he sent some Jewish elders asking Him to come and save the life of his slave. 4When they came to Jesus, they earnestly implored Him, saying, “He is worthy for You to grant this to him; for he loves our nation and it was he who built us our synagogue.” 6Now Jesus started on His way with them; and when He was not far from the house, the centurion sent friends, saying to Him, “Lord, do not trouble Yourself further, for I am not worthy for You to come under my roof; 7for this reason I did not even consider myself worthy to come to You, but just say the word, and my servant will be healed.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 5He loveth our nation - He is a warm friend to the Jews; and has given a full proof of his affection to them in building them a synagogue. This he had done at his own proper charges; having no doubt employed his own men in the work.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 5for he loves our nation and has built our synagogue: Wealthy Gentiles often supported Jewish communities in the Roman Empire. This suggests that the centurion might have been "God-fearing" like Cornelius in Acts 10:2. A God-fearing person was a Gentile who worshiped the God of Israel but had not fully converted to Judaism.Read the comment
