Context of Luke 7:5
3When the centurion heard about Jesus, he sent some Jewish elders to him, asking him to come and heal his slave. 4When they came to Jesus, they urged him earnestly, “He is worthy to have you do this for him, because he loves our nation, and even built our synagogue.” 6So Jesus went with them. When he was not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to say to him, “Lord, do not trouble yourself, for I am not worthy to have you come under my roof. 7That is why I did not presume to come to you. Instead, say the word, and my servant must be healed.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 5He loveth our nation - He is a warm friend to the Jews; and has given a full proof of his affection to them in building them a synagogue. This he had done at his own proper charges; having no doubt employed his own men in the work.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 5for he loves our nation and has built our synagogue: Wealthy Gentiles often supported Jewish communities in the Roman Empire. This suggests that the centurion might have been "God-fearing" like Cornelius in Acts 10:2. A God-fearing person was a Gentile who worshiped the God of Israel but had not fully converted to Judaism.Read the comment
