Context of Luke 7:5
3and having heard of Jesus, he sent to him elders of the Jews, begging him that he might come and save his bondman. 4But they, being come to Jesus, besought him diligently, saying, He is worthy to whom thou shouldest grant this, for he loves our nation, and himself has built the synagogue for us. 6And Jesus went with them. But already, when he was not far from the house, the centurion sent to him friends, saying to him, Lord, do not trouble thyself, for I am not worthy that thou shouldest enter under my roof. 7Wherefore neither did I count myself worthy to come to thee. But say by a word and my servant shall be healed.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 5He loveth our nation - He is a warm friend to the Jews; and has given a full proof of his affection to them in building them a synagogue. This he had done at his own proper charges; having no doubt employed his own men in the work.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 5for he loves our nation and has built our synagogue: Wealthy Gentiles often supported Jewish communities in the Roman Empire. This suggests that the centurion might have been "God-fearing" like Cornelius in Acts 10:2. A God-fearing person was a Gentile who worshiped the God of Israel but had not fully converted to Judaism.Read the comment
