Context of 2 Peter 1:12

10Therefore, brethren, be all the more diligent to make certain about His calling and choosing you; for as long as you practice these things, you will never stumble; 11for in this way the entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ will be abundantly supplied to you. Therefore, I will always be ready to remind you of these things, even though you already know them, and have been established in the truth which is present with you. 13I consider it right, as long as I am in this earthly dwelling, to stir you up by way of reminder, 14knowing that the laying aside of my earthly dwelling is imminent, as also our Lord Jesus Christ has made clear to me.

Commentaries on 2 Peter 1:12

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 12Wherefore I will not be negligent - He had already written one epistle, this is the second; and probably he meditated more should he be spared. He plainly saw that there was no way of entering into eternal life but that which he described from the 5th to the 10th verse; and although they knew and were established in the present truth, yet he saw it necessary to bring these things frequently to their recollection.Read the comment
• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 12Wherefore I will not be negligent - That is, in view of the importance of these things. To put you always in remembrance - To give you the means of having them always in remembrance; to wit, by his writings. Though ye know them - It was of importance for Peter, as it is for ministers of the gospel now, to bring known truths to remembrance. Men are liable to forget them, and they do not exert the influence over them which they ought. It is the office of…Read the comment
• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 12-15Verses 12-15 We must be established in the belief of the truth, that we may not be shaken by every wind of doctrine; and especially in the truth necessary for us to know in our day, what belongs to our peace, and what is opposed in our time. The body is but a tabernacle, or tent, of the soul. It is a mean and movable dwelling. The nearness of death makes the apostle diligent in the business of life. Nothing can so give composure in the prospect, or in the…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 12-15Peter was writing at the end of his life, and 2 Peter is similar to works that belong to a popular Jewish genre called the testament. This genre is especially well known from a Jewish work called The Testaments of the Twelve Patriarchs.Read the comment
• Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1212. Wherefore--as these graces are so necessary to your abundant entrance into Christ's kingdom (2Pe 1:10, 11). I will not be negligent--The oldest manuscripts read, "I will be about always to put you in remembrance" (an accumulated future: I will regard you as always needing to be reminded): compare "I will endeavor," 2Pe 1:15. "I will be sure always to remind you" [Alford]. "Always"; implying the reason why he writes the second Epistle so soon after the…Read the comment
