Context of Luke 5:34
32I’ve come to call sinners to change the way they think and act, not to call people who think they have God’s approval.” 33They said to him, “John’s disciples frequently fast and say prayers, and so do the disciples of the Pharisees. But your disciples eat and drink.” Jesus asked them, “Can you force wedding guests to fast while the groom is still with them? 35The time will come when the groom will be taken away from them. At that time they will fast.” 36He also used these illustrations: “No one tears a piece of cloth from a new coat to patch an old coat. Otherwise, the new cloth will tear the old. Besides, the patch from the new will not match the old.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 33-39Verses 33-39 See this passage illustrated in the notes at Matthew 9:14-17. Luke 5:39 Having drunk old wine - Wine increases its strength and flavor, and its mildness and mellowness, by age, and the old is therefore preferable. They who had tasted such mild and mellow wine would not readily drink the comparatively sour and astringent juice of the grape as it came from the press. The meaning of this proverb in this place seems to be this: You Pharisees…Read the comment

- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 34-35Can you make the guests of the bridegroom fast: Just as it would be inappropriate for anyone to fast at a wedding celebration, it was inappropriate for people to fast while the Christ (the Messiah, God's chosen king) was with them. God’s final salvation is a great wedding feast that God prepares for his people (Isaiah 25:6–8; Luke 14:15–24).Read the comment
