Context of Matthew 22:2
1Again Jesus used stories as illustrations when he spoke to them. He said, “The kingdom of heaven is like a king who planned a wedding for his son. 3He sent his servants to those who had been invited to the wedding, but they refused to come. 4He sent other servants to tell the people who had been invited, ‘I’ve prepared dinner. My bulls and fattened calves have been butchered. Everything is ready. Come to the wedding!’

Commentaries on Matthew 22:2
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 2The kingdom of heaven - In Bereshith Rabba, sect. 62. fol. 60, there is a parable very similar to this, and another still more so in Sohar. Levit. fol. 40. But these rabbinical parables are vastly ennobled by passing through the hands of our Lord. It appears from Luke, Luke 14:15; etc., that it was at an entertainment that this parable was originally spoken. It was a constant practice of our Lord to take the subjects of his discourses from the persons…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 2The kingdom of heaven - See the notes at Matthew 3:2. The idea here is, “God deals with man in his kingdom, or in regard to the dispensation of the gospel, as a certain king did,” etc. This parable refers, undoubtedly, to the rejection of the Jews and to the calling of the Gentiles. The gospel, with all its privileges, was offered to the Jewish people; but through their wickedness and pride they rejected it, and all its blessings were offered to the…Read the comment

- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1-14This is a different parable from that of the Great Supper, in Lu 14:15, &c., and is recorded by Matthew alone. 2. The kingdom of heaven is like unto a certain king, which made a marriage for his son--"In this parable," as Trench admirably remarks, "we see how the Lord is revealing Himself in ever clearer light as the central Person of the kingdom, giving here a far plainer hint than in the last parable of the nobility of His descent. There He was indeed…Read the comment
