Context of Luke 5:34
32I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.” 33Then they said to him, “John’s disciples fast often and say prayers, and those of the Pharisees do the same, but yours eat and drink.” Jesus said to them, “You can’t make the wedding guests fast while the groom is with them, can you? 35But the time will come when the groom will be taken away from them — then they will fast in those days.” 36He also told them a parable: “No one tears a patch from a new garment and puts it on an old garment. Otherwise, not only will he tear the new, but also the piece from the new garment will not match the old.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 33-39Verses 33-39 See this passage illustrated in the notes at Matthew 9:14-17. Luke 5:39 Having drunk old wine - Wine increases its strength and flavor, and its mildness and mellowness, by age, and the old is therefore preferable. They who had tasted such mild and mellow wine would not readily drink the comparatively sour and astringent juice of the grape as it came from the press. The meaning of this proverb in this place seems to be this: You Pharisees…Read the comment

- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 34-35Can you make the guests of the bridegroom fast: Just as it would be inappropriate for anyone to fast at a wedding celebration, it was inappropriate for people to fast while the Christ (the Messiah, God's chosen king) was with them. God’s final salvation is a great wedding feast that God prepares for his people (Isaiah 25:6–8; Luke 14:15–24).Read the comment
