Context of 2 Corinthians 11:2
1I want you to put up with a little foolishness from me. I’m sure that you will. I’m as protective of you as God is. After all, you’re a virgin whom I promised in marriage to one man—Christ. 3However, I’m afraid that as the snake deceived Eve by its tricks, so your minds may somehow be lured away from your sincere and pure devotion to Christ. 4When someone comes to you telling about another Jesus whom we didn’t tell you about, you’re willing to put up with it. When you receive a spirit that is different from the Spirit you received earlier, you’re also willing to put up with that. When someone tells you good news that is different from the Good News you already accepted, you’re willing to put up with that too.

Commentaries on 2 Corinthians 11:2
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 2I am jealous over you, etc. - The apostle evidently alludes either to the שושבינים shoshabinim or paranymphs among the Hebrews, whose office is largely explained in the notes on John 3:29, and the observations at the end of that chapter (see note at John 3:36;); or to the harmosyni, a sort of magistrates among the Lacedemonians who had the care of virgins, and whose business it was to see them well educated, kept pure, and properly prepared for married…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 2For I am jealous over you - This verse expresses the reason why he was disposed to speak of his attainments, and of what he had done. It was because he loved them, and because he feared that they were in danger of being seduced from the simplicity of the gospel. The phrase “I am jealous” ( ͂ Zēlō) means properly, I ardently love you; I am full of tender attachment to you. The word was usual among the Greeks to denote an ardent affection of any kind…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 2The church is meant to be a pure bride for one husband, Christ. This metaphor originates from the Old Testament, where Israel is the Lord's bride (Isaiah 54:5; 62:5). Paul viewed himself as the "best man" (the bridegroom’s close friend) who acted on behalf of the bridegroom (compare John 3:29).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 22. For I am jealous--The justification of his self-commendations lies in his zealous care lest they should fall from Christ, to whom he, as "the friend of the Bridegroom" (Joh 3:29), has espoused them; in order to lead them back from the false apostles to Christ, he is obliged to boast as an apostle of Christ, in a way which, but for the motive, would be "folly." godly jealousy--literally, "jealousy of God" (compare 2Co 1:12, "godly sincerity," literally…Read the comment
