Context of Luke 5:34
32I have come to call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners and need to repent.” 33One day some people said to Jesus, “John the Baptist’s disciples fast and pray regularly, and so do the disciples of the Pharisees. Why are your disciples always eating and drinking?” Jesus responded, “Do wedding guests fast while celebrating with the groom? Of course not. 35But someday the groom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast.” 36Then Jesus gave them this illustration: “No one tears a piece of cloth from a new garment and uses it to patch an old garment. For then the new garment would be ruined, and the new patch wouldn’t even match the old garment.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 33-39Verses 33-39 See this passage illustrated in the notes at Matthew 9:14-17. Luke 5:39 Having drunk old wine - Wine increases its strength and flavor, and its mildness and mellowness, by age, and the old is therefore preferable. They who had tasted such mild and mellow wine would not readily drink the comparatively sour and astringent juice of the grape as it came from the press. The meaning of this proverb in this place seems to be this: You Pharisees…Read the comment

- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 34-35Can you make the guests of the bridegroom fast: Just as it would be inappropriate for anyone to fast at a wedding celebration, it was inappropriate for people to fast while the Christ (the Messiah, God's chosen king) was with them. God’s final salvation is a great wedding feast that God prepares for his people (Isaiah 25:6–8; Luke 14:15–24).Read the comment
