Context of Luke 5:34
32I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance.” 33Then they said to Him, “John’s disciples and those of the Pharisees frequently fast and pray, but Yours keep on eating and drinking.” Jesus replied, “Can you make the guests of the bridegroom fast while He is with them? 35But the time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them; then they will fast.” 36He also told them a parable: “No one tears a piece of cloth from a new garment and sews it on an old one. If he does, he will tear the new garment as well, and the patch from the new will not match the old.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 33-39Verses 33-39 See this passage illustrated in the notes at Matthew 9:14-17. Luke 5:39 Having drunk old wine - Wine increases its strength and flavor, and its mildness and mellowness, by age, and the old is therefore preferable. They who had tasted such mild and mellow wine would not readily drink the comparatively sour and astringent juice of the grape as it came from the press. The meaning of this proverb in this place seems to be this: You Pharisees…Read the comment

- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 34-35Can you make the guests of the bridegroom fast: Just as it would be inappropriate for anyone to fast at a wedding celebration, it was inappropriate for people to fast while the Christ (the Messiah, God's chosen king) was with them. God’s final salvation is a great wedding feast that God prepares for his people (Isaiah 25:6–8; Luke 14:15–24).Read the comment
