Jonah 3
The Ninevites Repent
(Matthew 12:38–42; Luke 11:29–32)
1Then the wordH1697 of the LORDH3068 cameH1961 toH413 JonahH3124 a second timeH8145H559: 2“Get upH6965! GoH1980 toH413 the greatH1419 cityH5892 of NinevehH5210 and proclaimH7121 to itH413 the messageH7150 thatH834 IH595 giveH1696 youH413.”
3This time JonahH3124 got upH6965 and wentH1980 toH413 NinevehH5210, in accordance with the wordH1697 of the LORDH3068.
Now NinevehH5210 wasH1961 an exceedinglyH430 greatH1419 cityH5892,1 requiring a three-dayH7969H3117 journeyH4109.2 4On the firstH259 dayH3117 of his journeyH4109, JonahH3124H935 set outH2490 into the cityH5892 and proclaimedH7121H559, “FortyH705 moreH5750 daysH3117 and NinevehH5210 will be overturnedH2015!”
5And the NinevitesH582H5210 believedH539 GodH430. They proclaimedH7121 a fastH6685 and dressedH3847 in sackclothH8242, from the greatestH1419 of them toH5704 the leastH6996.
6When wordH1697H413 reachedH5060 the kingH4428 of NinevehH5210, he got upH6965 from his throneH3678, took offH5674 his royal robeH155, coveredH3680 himself with sackclothH8242, and satH3427H5921 inH5921 ashesH665.
7Then he issued a proclamationH2199H559 in NinevehH5210:
“By the decreeH2940 of the kingH4428 and his noblesH1419H559:
Let noH408 manH120 or beastH929, herdH1241 or flockH6629, tasteH2938 anything at allH3972. They must notH408 eatH7462 or drinkH8354H4325H408. 8Furthermore, let both manH120 and beastH929 be coveredH3680 with sackclothH8242, and have everyone call outH7121 earnestlyH2394 toH413 GodH430. Let each oneH376 turnH7725 fromH4480 his evilH7451 waysH1870 and from the violenceH2555 in his handsH3709. 9WhoH4310 knowsH3045? GodH430 may turnH7725 and relentH5162; He may turnH7725 from His fierceH2740 angerH639, so that we will notH3808 perishH6.”
10When GodH430 sawH7200 their actionsH4639—thatH3588 they had turnedH7725 from their evilH7451 waysH1870—He relentedH5162 fromH5921 the disasterH7451 He had threatenedH1696 to bringH6213 upon them.
