Context of Mark 4:39
37And there arose a fierce gale of wind, and the waves were breaking over the boat so much that the boat was already filling up. 38Jesus Himself was in the stern, asleep on the cushion; and they woke Him and said to Him, “Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?” And He got up and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Hush, be still.” And the wind died down and it became perfectly calm. 40And He said to them, “Why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith?” 41They became very much afraid and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey Him?”

Commentaries on Mark 4:39
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 39Peace, be still - Be silent! Be still! There is uncommon majesty and authority in these words. Who but God could act thus? Perhaps this salvation of his disciples in the boat might be designed to show forth that protection and deliverance which Christ will give to his followers, however violently they may be persecuted by earth or hell. At least, this is a legitimate use which may be made of this transaction.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 35-41Verses 35-41 See the notes at Matthew 8:18-27. Mark 4:36 Even as he was in the ship - They took him without making any preparation for the voyage; without providing any food or raiment. He was sitting in a ship, or boat, instructing the people. In the same boat, probably ill fitted to encounter a storm on the lake, they sailed. This would render their danger more imminent and the miracle more striking. There were with him other little ships - Belonging…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 35-41Verses 35-41 Christ was asleep in the storm, to try the faith of his disciples, and to stir them up to pray. Their faith appeared weak, and their prayers strong. When our wicked hearts are like the troubled sea which cannot rest, when our passions are unruly, let us think we hear the law of Christ, saying, Be silent, be dumb. When without are fightings, and within are fears, and the spirits are in a tumult, if he say, "Peace, be still," there is a great…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 39-40The disciples still lacked faith in Jesus (4:41), even though they had many chances to experience his power and authority (1:21–34, 40–45; 2:1–12; 3:1–5).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 3939. And he arose, and rebuked the wind--"and the raging of the water" (Lu 8:24). and said unto the sea, Peace, be still--two sublime words of command, from a Master to His servants, the elements. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm--The sudden hushing of the wind would not at once have calmed the sea, whose commotion would have settled only after a considerable time. But the word of command was given to both elements at once.Read the comment
