Context of Job 6:27
25How painful are honest words! But what does your argument prove? 26Do you intend to reprove my words, When the words of one in despair belong to the wind? You would even cast lots for the orphans And barter over your friend. 28Now please look at me, And see if I lie to your face. 29Desist now, let there be no injustice; Even desist, my righteousness is yet in it.

Commentaries on Job 6:27
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 27Ye overwhelm the fatherless - Ye see that I am as destitute as the most miserable orphan; would ye overwhelm such a one? and would you dig a pit for your friend - do ye lay wait for me, and endeavor to entangle me in my talk? I believe this to be the spirit of Job's words.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 27Yea, ye overwhelm the fatherless - Job undoubtedly means that this should be applied to himself. He complains that they took advantage of his words, that they were disposed to pervert his meaning, and unkindly distorted what he said. The word rendered” fatherless” יתום yâthôm properly denotes an orphan; Exodus 22:22; Deuteronomy 10:18; Deuteronomy 14:29. But it is possible that it is not to be taken in this limited signification here. The word is still…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 14-30Verses 14-30 In his prosperity Job formed great expectations from his friends, but now was disappointed. This he compares to the failing of brooks in summer. Those who rest their expectations on the creature, will find it fail when it should help them; whereas those who make God their confidence, have help in the time of need, He 4:16. Those who make gold their hope, sooner or later will be ashamed of it, and of their confidence in it. It is our wisdom to…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 27even cast lots for an orphan: Job once protected orphans (31:17, 21). He used a common saying to show his counselors' lack of compassion for those who had no one to defend them (see 17:5).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 2727. literally, "ye cause" (supply, "your anger") [Umbreit], a net, namely, of sophistry [Noyes and Schuttens], to fall upon the desolate (one bereft of help, like the fatherless orphan); and ye dig (a pit) for your friend--that is, try to ensnare him, to catch him in the use of unguarded language [Noyes]. (Psa 57:6); metaphor from hunters catching wild beasts in a pit covered with brushwood to conceal it. Umbreit from the Syriac, and answering to his…Read the comment
