Context of Genesis 13:5
3He went on his journeys from the Negev as far as Bethel, to the place where his tent had been at the beginning, between Bethel and Ai, 4to the place of the altar which he had made there formerly; and there Abram called on the name of the Lord. Now Lot, who went with Abram, also had flocks and herds and tents. 6And the land could not sustain them while dwelling together, for their possessions were so great that they were not able to remain together. 7And there was strife between the herdsmen of Abram’s livestock and the herdsmen of Lot’s livestock. Now the Canaanite and the Perizzite were dwelling then in the land.

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 5-9Verses 5-9 Riches not only afford matter for strife, and are the things most commonly striven about; but they also stir up a spirit of contention, by making people proud and covetous. - Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 5-7Lot was also wealthy, owning many animals. Tents play an important role in Lot's story (13:12). The Canaanites and the Perizzites (see 34:30; Deuteronomy 7:1; Judges 1:4; 3:5) controlled the fertile land.
