Genesis 13
Abram and Lot
1So Abram went up from Egypt to 1the 2Negev, he and his wife and all that belonged to him, and Lot with him.
2Now Abram was 3very rich in livestock, in silver and in gold. 3He went 4on his journeys from the 5Negev as far as Bethel, to the place where his tent had been at the beginning, 6between Bethel and Ai, 4to the place of the 7altar which he had made there formerly; and there Abram called on the name of the Lord. 5Now 8Lot, who went with Abram, also had flocks and herds and tents. 6And 9the land could not 10sustain them 11while dwelling together, 12for their possessions were so great that they were not able to remain together. 713And there was strife between the herdsmen of Abram’s livestock and the herdsmen of Lot’s livestock. Now 14the Canaanite and the Perizzite were dwelling then in the land.
815So Abram said to Lot, “Please let there be no strife between you and me, nor between my herdsmen and your herdsmen, for we are brothers. 9Is not the whole land before you? Please separate from me; if to the left, then I will go to the right; or if to the right, then I will go to the left.” 10Lot lifted up his eyes and saw all the 1617valley of the Jordan, that it was well watered everywhere--this was before the Lord 18destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah--like 19the garden of the Lord, 20like the land of Egypt as you go to 21Zoar. 11So Lot chose for himself all the 22valley of the Jordan, and Lot journeyed eastward. Thus they separated from each other. 12Abram 23settled in the land of Canaan, while Lot 24settled in 25the cities of the 26valley, and moved his tents as far as Sodom. 13Now 27the men of Sodom were wicked 28exceedingly and 29sinners against the Lord.
14The Lord said to Abram, after Lot had separated from him, “30Now lift up your eyes and look from the place where you are, 31northward and southward and eastward and westward; 1532for all the land which you see, 33I will give it to you and to your 34descendants forever. 16I will make your 35descendants 36as the dust of the earth, so that if anyone can number the dust of the earth, then your 37descendants can also be numbered. 17Arise, 38walk about the land through its length and breadth; for 39I will give it to you.” 18Then Abram moved his tent and came and dwelt by the 4041oaks of Mamre, which are in Hebron, and there he built 42an altar to the Lord.
