Context of 1 Corinthians 16:11

9for a wide door for effective service has opened to me, and there are many adversaries. 10Now if Timothy comes, see that he is with you without cause to be afraid, for he is doing the Lord’s work, as I also am. So let no one despise him. But send him on his way in peace, so that he may come to me; for I expect him with the brethren. 12But concerning Apollos our brother, I encouraged him greatly to come to you with the brethren; and it was not at all his desire to come now, but he will come when he has opportunity. 13Be on the alert, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong.

Commentaries on 1 Corinthians 16:11

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 11Let no man - despise him - Let none pretend to say that he has not full authority from God to do the work of an evangelist. But conduct him forth in peace - I believe, with Bp. Pearce, that this clause should be translated and pointed thus: accompany him upon his journey, that he may come unto me in peace, ( ͅ, in safety), as the word is used in Mark 5:34; and Luke 7:50. For I look for him with the brethren - - . This clause should not be understood as if…Read the comment
• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 11Let no man, therefore, despise him - Let no one despise him on account of his youth and inexperience. It is probable that some of the more wealthy and proud, some who valued themselves on their wisdom and experience, would be disposed to look upon him with contempt. On another occasion, he directed Timothy so to live as that no one should have occasion to despise him on account of his youth 1 Timothy 4:12; and he here urges on the Corinthians, that they…Read the comment
• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 10-12Verses 10-12 Timothy came to do the work of the Lord. Therefore to vex his spirit, would be to grieve the Holy Spirit; to despise him, would be to despise Him that sent him. Those who work the work of the Lord, should be treated with tenderness and respect. Faithful ministers will not be jealous of each other. It becomes the ministers of the gospel to show concern for each other's reputation and usefulness.Read the comment
