Context of 1 Chronicles 5:21
19They made war against the Hagrites, Jetur, Naphish and Nodab. 20They were helped against them, and the Hagrites and all who were with them were given into their hand; for they cried out to God in the battle, and He answered their prayers because they trusted in Him. They took away their cattle: their 50,000 camels, 250,000 sheep, 2,000 donkeys; and 100,000 men. 22For many fell slain, because the war was of God. And they settled in their place until the exile. 23Now the sons of the half-tribe of Manasseh lived in the land; from Bashan to Baal-hermon and Senir and Mount Hermon they were numerous.

Commentaries on 1 Chronicles 5:21
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 21They took away their cattle - This was a war of extermination as to the political state of the people, which nothing could justify but an especial direction of God; and this he could never give against any, unless the cup of their iniquity had been full. The Hagarites were full of idolatry: see 1 Chronicles 5:25.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 18-22The story of the war against the Hagrites expands on the elements introduced in 1 Chronicles 5:10. It was a conflict among shepherds over grazing land. All three tribes took part. The Chronicler describes their skills, military abilities, and numbers. With God fighting against the enemy, they won a great victory, gaining huge spoils and complete control of the territory.Read the comment
