5And the inhabitantsיֹשְׁבֵ֤יyo.she.VeiH3427of Jebusיְבוּס֙ye.VusH2982saidוַיֹּ֨אמְר֜וּvai.Yo.me.RuH559to Davidלְדָוִ֔ידle.da.VidH1732,Thou shalt not comeתָב֖וֹאta.Vo'H935hither. Nevertheless Davidדָּוִיד֙da.VidH1732tookוַיִּלְכֹּ֤דvai.yil.KodH3920the castleמְצֻדַ֣תme.tzu.DatH4686of Zionצִיּ֔וֹןtzi.YonH6726, which isthe cityעִ֥יר'irH5892of Davidדָּוִֽיד׃da.VidH1732.

7And Davidדָּוִ֖ידda.VidH1732dweltוַיֵּ֥שֶׁבvai.Ye.shevH3427in the castleבַּמְצָ֑דbam.TzadH4679;therefore they calledקָרְאוּ־ka.re.'u-H7121it the cityעִ֥יר'irH5892of Davidדָּוִֽיד׃da.VidH1732.

8And he builtוַיִּ֤בֶןvai.Yi.venH1129the cityהָעִיר֙ha.'IrH5892round aboutמִסָּבִ֔יבmi.sa.VivH5439,even from Milloהַמִּלּ֖וֹאha.mi.Lo'H4407round aboutהַסָּבִ֑יבha.sa.VivH5439:and Joabוְיוֹאָ֕בve.yo.'AvH3097repairedיְחַיֶּ֖הye.chai.YehH2421the restשְׁאָ֥רshe.'ArH7605of the cityהָעִֽיר׃ha.'IrH5892.

9So Davidדָּוִ֖ידda.VidH1732waxedH3212greaterH1980and greaterH1419:for the Lordוַיהוָ֥הva.Yah.wehH3068of hostsצְבָא֖וֹתtze.va.'otH6635was with him.

10These also arethe chiefרָאשֵׁ֤יra.SheiH7218of the mighty menהַגִּבּוֹרִים֙ha.gi.bo.RimH1368whom Davidלְדָוִ֔ידle.da.VidH1732had, who strengthenedהַמִּתְחַזְּקִ֨יםha.mit.cha.ze.KimH2388themselves with him in his kingdomבְמַלְכוּת֛וֹve.mal.khu.ToH4438, andwith all Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֖לYis.ra.'ElH3478,to make him kingלְהַמְלִיכ֑וֹle.ham.li.KhoH4427,according to the wordכִּדְבַ֥רkid.VarH1697of the Lordיְהוָ֖הYah.wehH3068concerning Israelיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ סYis.ra.'ElH3478.

13He was with Davidדָּוִ֜ידda.VidH1732at Pas–dammimH6450,and there the Philistinesוְהַפְּלִשְׁתִּים֙ve.ha.pe.lish.TimH6430were gathered togetherנֶאֱסְפוּ־ne.'es.fu-H622to battleלַמִּלְחָמָ֔הla.mil.cha.MahH4421,where was a parcelחֶלְקַ֥תchel.KatH2513of groundהַשָּׂדֶ֖הha.sa.DehH7704fullמְלֵאָ֣הme.le.'AhH4392of barleyשְׂעוֹרִ֑יםse.'o.RimH8184;and the peopleוְהָעָ֥םve.ha.'AmH5971fledנָ֖סוּNa.suH5127from beforeמִפְּנֵ֥יmi.pe.NeiH6440the Philistinesפְלִשְׁתִּֽים׃fe.lish.TimH6430.

16And Davidוְדָוִ֖ידve.da.VidH1732wasthen in the holdבַּמְּצוּדָ֑הba.me.tzu.DahH4686,and the Philistines’פְּלִשְׁתִּ֔יםpe.lish.TimH6430garrisonוּנְצִ֣יבu.ne.TzivH5333wasthen at Beth–lehemH1035.

17And Davidדָּוִ֖ידda.VidH1732longedוַיִּתְאָ֥יוvai.yit.'avH183,and saidוַיֹּאמַ֑רvai.yo.MarH559,Oh that one would give me drinkיַשְׁקֵ֣נִיyash.Ke.niH8248of the waterמַ֔יִםMa.yimH4325of the wellמִבּ֥וֹרmi.BorH953of Beth–lehemH1035, that isat the gateבַּשָּֽׁעַר׃ba.Sha.'arH8179!

19And saidוַיֹּ֡אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559,My Godמֵאֱלֹהַ֜יme.'e.lo.HaiH430forbidחָלִילָה֩cha.li.LahH2486it me, that I should doמֵעֲשׂ֣וֹתme.'a.SotH6213this thingזֹ֗אתZotH2063:shall I drinkאֶשְׁתֶּ֤ה'esh.TehH8354the bloodהֲדַ֣םha.DamH1818of these menהָאֲנָשִׁים֩ha.'a.na.ShimH582that have put their lives in jeopardyבְנַפְשׁוֹתָם֙ve.naf.sho.TamH5315? for with the jeopardy oftheir livesבְנַפְשׁוֹתָ֣םve.naf.sho.TamH5315they broughtהֱבִיא֔וּםhe.vi.'UmH935it.
