Context of Luke 23:14
12So Herod and Pilate became friends that day. They had been enemies before this. 13Then Pilate called together the chief priests, the rulers, and the people. He told them, “You brought me this man as someone who turns the people against the government. I’ve questioned him in front of you and haven’t found this man guilty of the crimes of which you accuse him. 15Neither could Herod. So he sent this man back to us. This man hasn’t done anything to deserve the death penalty. 16So I’m going to have him whipped and set free.”

Commentaries on Luke 23:14
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 13-25Verses 13-25 The fear of man brings many into this snare, that they will do an unjust thing, against their consciences, rather than get into trouble. Pilate declares Jesus innocent, and has a mind to release him; yet, to please the people, he would punish him as an evil-doer. If no fault be found in him, why chastise him? Pilate yielded at length; he had not courage to go against so strong a stream. He delivered Jesus to their will, to be crucified.Read the comment
