Philippians 3:9
9I want to be united with him. Because I believe in Christ, God accepts me as right with him. I know that I cannot become right in any other way, even if I obey all of God's Law. When I trust in Christ, God accepts me as right because of my faith.

Context of Philippians 3:9
7All those ideas seemed very important to me then. But now they are worth nothing to me, because I trust in Christ. 8Yes, now that I know Christ Jesus as my Lord, that is the most valuable thing. Nothing else is important at all. I have thrown everything else away, so that I can serve Christ. All those other things are like dirt to me. I think about them like that, so that I can have Christ. I want to be united with him. Because I believe in Christ, God accepts me as right with him. I know that I cannot become right in any other way, even if I obey all of God's Law. When I trust in Christ, God accepts me as right because of my faith. 10Yes, I want to know Christ better and better. I want to know the power which God showed when Christ rose from death. I want to have the same kind of troubles that he did. I want to obey God like he did in his death. 11Then I hope that I also will become alive again after death.

Commentaries on Philippians 3:9
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 9And be found in him - Be found a believer in Christ, not having mine own righteousness - not trusting in any thing I have done or could do, in order to my salvation; relying on no scheme of justification, set up either formerly by myself or by others. But that which is through the faith of Christ - That justification which is received by faith through the atonement made by Christ. The righteousness which is of God - God's method of justifying sinners…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 9And be found in him - That is, united to him by a living faith. The idea is, that when the investigations of the great day should take place in regard to the ground of salvation, it might be found that he was united to the Redeemer and depended solely on his merits for salvation; compare the notes at John 6:56. Not having mine own righteousness - That is, not relying on that for salvation. This was now the great aim of Paul, that it might be found at last…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 9Paul explains the difference between his view of salvation and that of his opponents (3:2). Believers unite with Christ by trusting him for salvation and sharing in his life (see John 15:1–5). We become righteous not by following the law of Moses, but through faith in Christ. This is God's way of making us right with him: Salvation is a free gift, not something we can earn (see Romans 1:17; 3:21–26; 4:5–8; Galatians 2:16; Ephesians 2:8–9).Read the comment
