Context of Acts 19:21
19Some of them had used magic to do powerful things. These people brought all their special books and they burned them in a fire. Everybody saw what they did. The books had cost a lot of money. The value of all the books was 50,000 silver coins. 20As a result of this, more and more people heard the good news about the Lord Jesus. The message was powerful and people's lives changed. After these things happened, Paul decided that he should go to Jerusalem. But first he wanted to visit the believers in Macedonia and Greece. He said, ‘After I have been to Jerusalem, I must also go to Rome.’ 22At that time, Timothy and Erastus were helping Paul with his work. Paul sent them to Macedonia while he stayed longer in Asia region. 23Soon after that, there was bad trouble in Ephesus. Some people began to speak strongly against the Way of the Lord Jesus.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 21Paul purposed in the spirit, etc. - Previously to this he appears to have concerted a journey to Macedonia, and a visit to Corinth, the capital of Achaia, where he seems to have spent a considerable time, probably the whole winter of a.d. 58; see 1 Corinthians 16:5, 1 Corinthians 16:6; and afterwards to go to Jerusalem; but it is likely that he did not leave Ephesus till after pentecost, a.d. 59. Instead of going right away, he sent Timothy. Timothy carried a letter, 1 Corinthians, from Paul to the Corinthians (1 Corinthians 4:17; 16:10–11). Paul later traveled to Macedonia and Achaia (Acts 20:1–3). “I must see Rome as well”: Paul, perhaps inspired by his successful strategy, wanted to share the gospel in the world's most…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 21-2221-22. After these things were ended--completed, implying something like a natural finish to his long period of labor at Ephesus. Paul purposed ... when he had passed through Macedonia and Achaia, to go to Jerusalem ... After I have been there, I must also see Rome--Mark here the vastness of the apostle's missionary plans.
