Context of Acts 21:4
2At Patara, we found a ship that was going to Phoenicia. So we got onto the ship and we sailed across the sea. 3After travelling for some time, we could see the island called Cyprus. We went south of Cyprus, and we continued as far as Syria. We arrived on the coast at the city of Tyre and we got off the ship. The ship would remain in Tyre for some days, because people had to remove the things off the ship. We found some believers in the city. So we stayed with them for a week. The Holy Spirit showed these believers that trouble would come to Paul in Jerusalem. So they said to him, ‘Paul, you should not to go to Jerusalem.’ 5After a week with the believers in Tyre, it was time for us to leave them. All the believers, together with their wives and their children, went with us out of the city. At the beach, we all went down on our knees and we prayed together. 6Then we said ‘goodbye’ to each other and the believers returned to their homes in the city. We went and we got on the ship again, together with Paul.

Commentaries on Acts 21:4
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 4Who said to Paul through the Spirit - We cannot understand this as a command from the Holy Spirit not to go up to Jerusalem, else Paul must have been highly criminal to have disobeyed it. Through the Spirit, must either refer to their own great earnestness to dissuade him from taking a journey which they plainly saw would be injurious to him - and so Bp. Pearce understands this place; or, if it refer to the Holy Spirit, it must mean that if he regarded…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 4And finding disciples - Christians. This is the first mention of there being Christians at Tyre, but there is no improbability in supposing that the gospel had been preached there, though it is not expressly recorded by Luke. Who said to Paul - Compare Acts 21:12. Their deep interest in his welfare, and their apprehension of his danger, was the reason why they admonished him not to go. Through the Spirit - There is some difficulty in understanding this…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 4-6The disciples in Tyre gave Paul a warm and emotional farewell. This shows the deep fellowship (shared life and unity) among Christians. Through the Spirit they kept telling Paul not to go up to Jerusalem: The disciples in Tyre clearly understood the danger he would face there. Because they cared for him, they tried to persuade him not to go. However, Paul accepted these risks. He chose to go in order to complete the mission God had given him (compare…Read the comment
